Q:
How to remove and install torsion bars on Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe,GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali and Yukon XL? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and install torsion bars on a vehicle, first measure the ride height at the front and mark the spot on the frame for future reference. Then, raise the front of the vehicle and count the number of threads showing on the torsion bar adjuster bolt. Install a puller on the torsion bar adjuster arm and turn the bolt until all tension is removed, then unscrew the adjuster bolt and remove the nut. Slowly unscrew the puller bolt until the torsion bar unwinds completely and remove the puller. Mark the relationship of the torsion bar to the lower control arm and adjuster arm, push the torsion bar forward through the lower control arm, and remove the adjuster arm. Repeat on the other torsion bar and inspect the bushings in the frame bosses where the crossmember mounts. To install, clean out the hexagonal hole in the lower control arm and lube it with multi-purpose grease before inserting the torsion bar. Apply grease to the hex ends of the torsion bar, the top of the adjuster's arm, and the adjuster bolt. Make sure the alignment marks line up and the torsion bar is completely engaged with the adjuster's arm. Tighten the crossmember mounting fasteners and the adjuster bolt, then lower the vehicle and bounce the front suspension to settle it. Repeat until both sides are set to the original ride height and have the front-end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
