Because of the clutch's location between the engine and transaxle, accessing and working on the clutch requires either removing the engine or transaxle. If engine removal is not necessary, the quickest way to access the clutch is by removing the transaxle. Once the transaxle is removed, mark the relationship of the pressure plate assembly to the flywheel for installation purposes. Before removing the pressure plate assembly, check for any distortion or bending of the metal fingers on the pressure plate. If damage is present, the pressure plate will need to be replaced. Loosen the attaching bolts in a diagonal pattern to relieve spring pressure on the pressure plate. Support the pressure plate assembly and remove the bolts, followed by the pressure plate and clutch disc. From inside the transaxle, remove the clutch release bearing and release fork. Clean the pressure plate, flywheel mating surfaces, and bearing retainer outer surfaces of any oil and grease. Examine the pressure plate surface for smoothness and check for damage on the pressure plate cover and fingers. Replace the entire pressure plate assembly if any faults are found. Inspect the clutch disc for lining wear, loose or broken rivets or springs. Inspect the flywheel surface for grooves, burnt areas, or scoring. If damage is slight, the flywheel can be reconditioned using a lathe, but deep damage requires replacement. Check the ring gear teeth for any issues. Ensure the release fork is not cracked or bent and that the release bearing turns freely without noise. If oil is detected on the clutch components, locate and eliminate the source. To install, align the clutch disc and pressure plate with the marks made during removal, using a centering tool. The clutch disc should be installed with the damper springs offset toward the transaxle. Install the mounting bolts and tighten them in a diagonal cross-pattern to the specified torque. Lubricate the release bearing and reinstall it and the release fork into the transaxle. Finally, install the transaxle.

Before reinstalling the clutch components, lubricate the release bearing.
