- A:The following procedure is for removing and installing the distributor on various engines. To remove the distributor, start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and removing the air intake duct or resonator. Rotate the crankshaft to position the number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke. Disconnect the electrical connector and coil high-tension cable from the distributor cap. Remove the cap and position it aside with the spark plug wires still connected. Verify that the distributor rotor is pointing at the high-tension terminal for the No. 1 cylinder and make a mark on the distributor body. Mark the position of the distributor base to the engine. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp, then pull the distributor straight up, making a second mark below the rotor's stopping point. To install the distributor, reposition the number one piston at TDC if necessary. Turn the rotor until it points approximately 42-degrees counterclockwise from the first mark. Insert the distributor into the engine block, ensuring the rotor aligns with the first mark. Align the marks on the distributor base and intake manifold, and check that the rotor is still aligned with the first mark. Install the distributor hold-down clamp and tighten the bolt.
