Q:
How do you remove and install timing belt and Sprocket on V6 engine for Saturn LS and LS1? Posted by Customer
A:
Begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and removing the timing belt cover. Set the engine to TDC for cylinder number one, then turn the crankshaft counter-clockwise until it's at 60 degrees before TDC, and remove the spark plugs. Install the crankshaft locking tool onto the crankshaft and rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the tool rests against the water pump pulley flange. This positions the engine at TDC number 1. Next, use special tools to lock the camshaft sprockets in place and loosen the timing belt tensioner, along with the upper and lower timing belt guide pulleys, to release belt tension. Remove the timing belt, and if necessary, the camshaft sprockets. Inspect the sprocket teeth, timing belt, camshaft endplay, and timing belt tensioner for wear or damage, replacing any worn parts. Inspect the water pump as well. Clean the timing belt area thoroughly and clean the sprocket teeth with lacquer thinner. Reinstall the timing belt sprockets if they were removed, ensuring their keys are intact. Verify the timing marks on the sprockets and remove the crankshaft locking tool. Depending on the engine type, follow either Engines before 578511 or Engines after 578512 instructions. For Engines before 578511, mark the timing belt guide pulleys' positions and install the timing belt over the camshaft sprockets, lower guide pulley, and crankshaft sprocket. Use a timing belt wedge to prevent movement. Install the timing belt around the tensioner, then the rear camshaft sprockets, and under the upper timing belt guide pulley. Adjust the pulleys' positions and tension the belt correctly. Recheck the alignment marks, remove the crankshaft locking tool, and rotate the engine to confirm alignment. Tighten the pulleys and torque the tensioner bolt. Recheck all alignment marks. Install the timing belt cover and reconnect the battery. For Engines after 578512, use special tools to check camshaft timing marks. Install the timing belt over the rear camshaft sprockets, tensioner, upper timing belt guide pulley, and the front camshaft sprockets. Use the timing belt gauge to align the marks. Install the camshaft sprocket locking tool if necessary. Rotate the camshafts and tension the belt properly. Remove the crankshaft locking tool, rotate the engine to verify alignment, and recheck the camshaft and crankshaft marks. Install the timing belt cover and reconnect the battery. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal.
