Q:
How to remove the steering knuckle? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the steering knuckle, first loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and, if working on a 4WD model, remove the driveaxle/hub nut. Brace a large prybar across two of the wheel studs or insert a large screwdriver through the center of the brake caliper and into the disc cooling vanes to prevent the hub from turning as the nut is loosened. On models equipped with a torsion bar suspension, support the lower control arm with a floor jack and raise the jack slightly. Remove the brake caliper and brake disc, and hang the caliper out of the way on a piece of wire (don't disconnect the brake hose). Remove the hub and bearing assembly, and the disc splash shield from the steering knuckle. Unbolt the brake hose bracket from the top of the steering knuckle, disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle, and disconnect the upper and lower arms from the steering knuckle. To install, reverse the removal steps, ensuring that the hub and bearing assembly, balljoint, and tie-rod end fasteners are tightened to the torque specifications. Tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the torque specifications, and the driveaxle/hub nut to the torque specifications (4WD models). Finally, tighten the wheel lug nuts to the torque specifications.
