    Q:
How to test and replace faulty relays on Cadillac DTS? Posted by Customer
    A:
The relays are used in the vehicle for transmitting electrical signals to components such as fuel injection system, horns, starter and fog lamps. In a relay, there is a control circuit that opens and closes a power circuit with low current and high current respectively. If a relay becomes defective, its related component will not function properly. Many relays are usually located in engine compartments including interior fuse/relay boxes while other models have their fuse blocks or electrical centers under the rear seat or in the trunk. Follow these procedures to remove and test suspected faulty relays or have them evaluated by a dealer service department or repair shop. It is necessary to replace faulty relays with complete units. Most of these vehicles use relays that meet "ISO" relay type standards which are identified by numbered terminals showing their usual circuits' connections and functions. These relays have two main terminal layouts. Two of the relay terminals serve as the control circuit and connect to the relay coil, while the remaining terminals function as the power circuit. When energized, the coil generates a magnetic field that closes the large contacts of the power circuit supplying power to the loads in this circuit. Usually, terminals 85 and 86 are used as control circuits with terminal 86 connected to battery positive (B+) voltage when it has diode while terminal 85 grounded on some applications. For relays containing a resistor, terminals 85 and 86 can be connected in either direction concerning B+ and ground. Terminal 30 is generally connected to battery voltage (B+) source for circuit loads; whereas terminal 87 connects to downstream path of controlled component's circuitry. Those few types having several alternative load or ground connections may often be labeled as 87A, 87B, 87C etcetera. To determine if continuity exists throughout the entire relay control coil an ohmmeter should be used. During testing it is important to follow polarity indicated within the illustration, reversing the ohmmeter leads to check continuity in the other direction. A relay that contains a resistor should have consistent resistance in either direction, whereas a diode would demonstrate high resistance when its applied polarity is opposite to the reverse polarity. In case the ohmmeter registers infinite resistance in both directions then replace the relay. Furthermore, the vehicle's relay can be taken out of it and continuity tested between its power circuit terminals where terminal 30 and 87 should not show any continuity if the relay is de-energized. If correct fused jumper wires are connected to terminal 86 and 85 and from positive battery terminal to ground respectively, then there must be clicking sound at this relay. By placing these jumper wires across power circuit terminals, one can test for continuity using continuity tester between terminals 30 and 87.Within these tests, if relay fails it should be replaced as necessary.

    Q:
What are relays and how are they used on Chevrolet Avalanche? Posted by Customer
    A:
Relays are used in several electrical circuits in vehicles to transmit electrical signals to components. They use a low-current control circuit to open and close a high-current power circuit. If a relay is defective, the corresponding component will not function properly. Most relays are located in the engine compartment fuse/relay box, with some specialized relays located above the interior fuse box in the dash. To test a suspected faulty relay, it can be removed and tested using an ohmmeter to check continuity through the relay control coil and power circuit terminals. The terminals of ISO relays are numbered to indicate their usual circuit connections and functions. If the relay fails any of the tests, it must be replaced as a unit.

    Q:
How to test and diagnose a faulty relay on Chevrolet Equinox? Posted by Customer
    A:
Relays carry out the transmission of electrical signals to many electrical accessories found in vehicles, including fuel injection system, horns, starter, and fog lamps. The low-current circuit (the control circuit) is used by relays to open and close a high-current circuit (the power circuit). Defective relay may cause the related component to malfunction. Most relays are located in the engine compartment and interior fuse/relay boxes with primary fuse/relay panel being found in the engine compartment upon unlocking the tabs and removing both the outer and inner covers. To diagnose a suspected faulty relay, remove it for testing according to the procedure described or contact a dealer service department or repair shop where defective relays must be replaced as complete units. When testing relays, you should remember: Most of these vehicle's relays follow "ISO" relay standard which means International Standards Organization. These ISO relays have numbered terminals that indicate their normal circuit connections and functions. External labels often exist on these vehicles' relays that show control and power circuits for easy identification because they have two basic terminal layouts. Generally, terminals 85and 86 represent typical relay control circuits connecting them to the coil while other relay terminals relate to power circuitry. On energizing the relay, its coil produces a magnetic field that closes larger contacts within the power circuitry to drive loads on this circuitry. Typically, terminal 86 is connected to battery positive (B+) voltage while terminal 85 is grounded via diode; for resistor cases one could connect terminals either way with respect to B+ and ground or simply ground at terminal 85 with B+ at terminal 86. Terminal 30 is usually connected directly with battery voltage (B+) source for loads whereas terminal 87 establishes connection with ground side of this load through a load or simply it may be accompanied by other terminals like 87A, 87B, 87C etcetera for loading or grounding. Continuity through the relay control coil should be checked with an ohmmeter observing proper polarity during testing. The resistance should be the same irrespective of the polarity of the leads on the ohmmeter and for relays with a diode, higher resistance is recorded in forward direction of polarity. If infinite resistance is indicated on the ohmmeter in both directions, then change relays. Lastly, check for continuity between terminal 30 and 87 when relay is de-energized by removing the relay from the vehicle and using an ohmmeter to test continuity across its power circuit terminals; there should be no continuity between terminal 30 and 87 if it is healthy. On connecting fused jumper wires to terminals 86and 85, as well as positive battery terminal and ground correspondingly, relay makes a distinct click as soon as connections are established therein. In this configuration, terminals 30 and 87 should show continuity. If any of these tests fails, replace the relay.
