A:
During a steering linkage inspection, the Pitman arm, idler arm, relay rod, adjustable tie-rods, and steering damper (if applicable) should be checked for damage or excessive play. If play is found in the relay rod or tie-rod, they should be replaced. If the idler arm has more than 0.078 inches of play, it should be replaced. When removing and installing inner tie-rods, a heavy-duty thread locker should be applied and tightened to torque specifications. To remove and install the relay rod, tie-rod ends should be detached from the steering knuckle arms, and the relay rod should be separated from the Pitman arm and idler arm. New nuts should be used on all ball studs and tightened to torque specifications. When removing and installing the idler arm, a two-jaw puller should be used to separate it from the relay rod, and new nuts should be used on the ball stud. To remove and install the Pitman arm, a puller should be used to separate it from the relay rod, and a new nut should be used on the ball stud. The steering damper should be inspected for fluid leakage and excessive wear, and if necessary, replaced. When removing and installing the steering damper, the fasteners should be tightened to torque specifications.
