To inspect the lower ball joint for any issues such as looseness or damage to the seal, follow these steps: First, raise and securely support the vehicle, allowing the front suspension to hang freely. Then, have an assistant grasp the top and bottom of the tire, moving the top in and out to check for vertical movement of the knuckle relative to the lower control arm; replace the ball joint if any movement is detected. Check the ball stud's tightness in the knuckle boss by shaking the wheel and feeling for any movement of the stud end or castellated nut; also, verify the torque of the castellated nut, as a loose nut could indicate problems like a bent stud or an enlarged hole in the knuckle boss. Replace any worn or damaged ball joint or knuckle. If the ball stud is disconnected from the knuckle and you detect looseness or if you can twist the ball stud in its socket using finger pressure, replace the ball joint. For removal and installation, begin by raising and securely supporting the vehicle and removing the wheel and tire assembly. On Eldorado and Seville with a 4.6L engine, remove the road sensing suspension position sensor from the lower control arm. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the ball joint stud and use the appropriate ball joint separator tool to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle. On Deville and Fleetwood, loosen the stabilizer bar link nut and drill out the three rivets retaining the ball joint to the lower control arm. The recommended drill bit size is Y inch (13 mm). To install a new ball joint, attach it to the lower control arm with three mounting bolts and nuts, ensuring the correct orientation depending on the vehicle model. Tighten the nuts to the specified torque values. Reconnect the ball joint to the steering knuckle, install the castellated nut, and secure it with a new cotter pin. On Eldorado and Seville with a 4.6L engine, reinstall the road sensing suspension position sensor, and if necessary, remove the CV-joint boot protector tool before finally installing the wheel and tire assembly and lowering the vehicle.
