Q:
How to check and replace ball joints in Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe,GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali and Yukon XL's suspension system? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the upper ball joint, inspect for looseness when separated from the steering knuckle or use a dial indicator to measure deflection. If the reading exceeds 0.079 inches, replace the upper arm. For the lower ball joint, inspect for looseness or use a dial indicator to measure deflection. If the reading exceeds 0.079 inches, replace the ball joint. To remove the lower ball joint, remove the control arm and use a hammer and chisel to knock back the crimped areas. To install, press the new ball joint into the control arm and crimp or stake it in place. The upper ball joint is not replaceable separately, so the entire upper control arm must be replaced. Have the front-end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
