- A:To remove the rear cables, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the rear of the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the wheels and then loosen the equalizer nut to slacken the cables. Disconnect the cable to be replaced from the equalizer. Next, remove the brake drum from the axle flange and the brake shoe assembly far enough to disconnect the cable end from the parking brake lever. Finally, depress the tangs on the cable housing retainer and push the housing and cable through the backing plate. To install the rear cable, reverse the removal procedure and adjust the cable as needed. For the front cable, begin by raising the vehicle and supporting it securely on jackstands. Loosen the equalizer assembly to provide slack in the cable and then disconnect the front cable from the cable joiner near the equalizer. Disconnect the cable from the pedal assembly and free the cable from the routing clips. Push the cable and grommet through the firewall. To install the front cable, reverse the removal procedure and adjust the cable as necessary.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
