- A:The evaporative emissions control system functions to draw fuel vapors from the gas tank and fuel system, store them in a charcoal canister and route them to the intake manifold during normal engine operation. The most common symptom of a fault in this system is a strong fuel odor in the engine compartment. If a fuel odor is detected, an inspection of the charcoal canister, located in the engine compartment below the master cylinder, is necessary. The charcoal canister is located in the engine compartment on the driver's side firewall.
