    Q:
What is the common practice for installing a new distributor cap and rotor when replacing spark plug wires on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
It's common practice to install a new distributor cap and rotor whenever new spark plug wires are installed, and on models with the ignition coil mounted in the cap, the coil must be transferred to the new cap. To access the distributor cap, remove the air cleaner assembly and loosen the distributor cap mounting screws, noting that the screws have a shoulder so they don't come completely out. On some models, the cap is held in place with latches that resemble screws; to release them, push down with a screwdriver and turn them about 1/2-turn. Pull up on the cap, with the wires attached, to separate it from the distributor, then position it to one side. The rotor will now be visible on the end of the distributor shaft; check it for cracks and carbon tracks, ensuring the center terminal spring tension is adequate while looking for corrosion and wear on the rotor tip. If replacement is necessary, detach the rotor from the shaft and install a new one, noting that some rotors are press fit and can be pried off, while others are attached with screws. The rotor is indexed to the shaft for proper installation, and the distributor cap should be checked for carbon tracks, cracks, and damage, with a small dab of silicone lubricant applied to each terminal before installation. For models with a separately mounted ignition coil, separate the cap from the distributor and transfer the spark plug wires one at a time to the new cap, ensuring not to mix up the wires. For coil-in-cap distributors, push the spark plug wire retainer latches away from the coil cover, lift the retainer ring away from the distributor cap, disconnect the battery/tachometer/coll electrical connector, remove the coil cover screws, and lift the coil out of the cap. When installing the coil in the new cap, ensure a new rubber arc seal is installed, followed by the coil screws, wires in the connector hood, and the coil cover. Finally, install the cap on the distributor, plug in the coil electrical connector, and install the spark plug wire retaining ring on the distributor cap.

    Q:
How to maintain spark plug wires and inspect the distributor cap and rotor on Chevrolet Blazer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Cylinder engines that have a distributor-less ignition system, whereby the ignition coils are connected directly to the spark plug wires. While in V6 engine case, there is a distributor that is located at the back of the block. The spark plug wires need regular inspection usually on the recommended intervals and also every time new plugs are fitted. It is important to look at one wire at a time when inspecting them so as not mix their order, this is crucial in proper working of an engine. To disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug, grab the rubber boot, twist slightly, and pull the wire off. Avoid pulling on the wire itself, only on the rubber boot. Inside the boot, check for corrosion, which appears as a white crusty powder. Push it back onto the spark plug ensuring it is tight enough. If it does not stay put crimp with pliers until it fits securely again removing if necessary from metal connector inside lug armor then replacing once again with secure fit. Get a clean rag and wipe along it from top to bottom to remove any dirt or grease from its entire length. While cleaning examine for burns or cracks; however do not bend or stretch it too far since the conductor could break easily therefore tampering with efficiency as well as function of engine operation. For four-cylinder engines just pull on rubber boot when detaching wire from coil pack.Remove wire from distributor located at rear of engine for V6 engines.Check for corrosion and tightness before replacing as needed either in coil pack or distributor.Proceed to check other individual spark plug wires one after another making sure they are properly connected into place either on igniton coil or distributor and to plug.If you need new spark plug wires buy ones that match your vehicle's make and model so you don't end up swapping firing order by mistake. To inspect cap remove retainer screws.Loose contacts worn out burned carbon tracks cracks are some of things that may be found inside it.Remove retainer screws and pull rotor off distributor shaft to look for cracks and carbon tracks. If you find any damage or defects, replace the cap and rotor. It is recommended that a new cap and rotor should be installed when new spark plug wires are being replaced. In this case, remove the wires from the old cap one at a time and place them on the new one in the same place so that there can't be any mix-ups of their firing order.

    Q:
How to check and replace spark plug wires and Distributor Cap on Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
    A:
Spark plug wires should be inspected at the prescribed service interval and always when the spark plugs have been replaced in the engine. Some models for example the 4.3L V6, 5.0L V8, 5.7L V8, 7.4L V8 contain spark plug wires that runs from the plug to the distributor whereas models like 4.8V V8 models, 5.3V V8 and 6.0 L V8 contain individual coils for each cylinder so they will only contain short plug wires. For access, loosen the front wheel lug nuts and then chocks the vehicle on a jack stand, then pull off the wheels and inner fender splash shields. Initially, perform a surface check using the engine while running with your lights off identifying those spark plug wires which arc or spark. A plug wire can be disconnected simply by holding firmly the rubber boot on it and twirling it and pulling it downward without having to hold the wire. Inspect the corrosion on the inside of the boot making sure that it gives a perfect fit on the spark plug; Trim the metal connector if it has been laid back in order to make a perfect connection. Using a rag wipe the wire down, ensuring that it isn't bent too many times or otherwise damaged. Remove a wire from the distributor cap or coil, inspecting the corrosion and proper fit before reconnecting the wire. Perform the same process on all spark plug wires making sure they are properly connected. If new wire is required it is recommended to get a set of wires appropriate for the particular model of the engine, connect them one at a time restoring the firing order and ensuring the right wire path. In case of the engine has a distributor, then, using a wrench, unscrew the distributor cap screws and lift the cap up while still connected to the wires and then examine the rotor for crack or any sign of wear and if, then replace it. The rotor has to be fitted accurately so that the internal key has to fit into the slot provided in the shaft. Check distributor cap for signs of wear and rust, if it is worn or rusty replace it, after that apply silicone dielectric grease around any terminal before the cap is reinstalled. Carefully connect the spark plug wires to the new cap so that they don't get mixed up and then the cap back to the car then screws it down.
