Q:
How to remove and install a Steering Knuckle? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the wheel, start by loosening the lug nuts and raising the vehicle with jackstands placed securely under the frame. Apply the parking brake and remove the wheel. Next, remove the brake caliper and place it on top of the upper control arm. Then, remove the brake rotor and the splash shield from the steering knuckle. Separate the tie-rod end from the steering arm. If the steering knuckle needs to be replaced, remove the dust seal from the spindle and replace it if damaged. Position a floor jack under the lower control arm balljoint to relieve spring pressure. Remove the cotter pins from the upper and lower balljoint studs and back off the nuts. Break the balljoints loose from the steering knuckle and remove the nuts. Finally, remove the knuckle from the vehicle. To install, place the knuckle between the upper and lower control arms and insert the balljoint studs into the knuckle, starting with the lower balljoint. Tighten the nuts to the specified torque and install new cotter pins. Install the splash shield and connect the wheel speed sensor harness connector if applicable. Connect the tie-rod end to the steering arm and tighten the nut with a new cotter pin. Install the brake rotor, brake caliper, and the wheel. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque specifications.
