    Q:
How can the oil pump and screen be accessed on Buick Century? Posted by Customer
    A:
Through removing the oil pan, the oil pump and screen can be accessed. For Buick engines, you should put the driveshaft extension via the main bearing cap until it mates with the distributor drive gear. Thereafter, put the pump on top of the cap and secure it using bolts. In 231, 252 and 350 Buick engines, however, the oil pump is located in the timing chain cover and is connected to a pipe assembly and oil screen housing in the pan. To remove them, you must first take out the oil filter. The cover assembly now becomes removable allowing one to remove oil pump gears. For that case, it's important that gears should be cleaned as well as inspected for defects. Oil pump gear wear specifications are also available for 1981-87 engines. Gear tip wear can be measured by passing a narrow feeler gauge between gear teeth tips and wall of the oil pump housing. Checking for any wear or scoring on its surface then is necessary concerning lubrication of relief valve along with spring using clean engine oil so that they can be placed in cover again. When reinstalling gears petroleum jelly must fill up inside of an oil pump gear cavity. This time around when installing use new gasket and sealer on a cover assembly as well as use a final step to install an oil filler.

    Q:
How to install and check clearances in the oil pump in V6 engine on Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
Lubricate the pressure relief valve and spring before installing them in the bore of the oil pump case, then install the cap and gasket, torquing them to specifications. Insert the oil pump gear and shaft into the oil pump body section of the timing chain cover to check the gear end clearance and side clearance; use a straightedge over the gears to measure the clearance between it and the gasket surface, ensuring the end clearance is between 0.002-0.006 in. If it is less than 0.002, measure the gears and pocket to identify the out-of-specification component. For side clearance, it should be between 0.0025-0.0050 in., and if it exceeds 0.0050, measure the gears and pocket accordingly. Check the flatness of the oil pump cover face with a straightedge and feeler gauge, replacing the cover if the clearance is 0.001 in or more. If all clearances are satisfactory, remove the gears and pack the pocket with petroleum jelly, avoiding chassis lube. Re-install the gears, ensuring petroleum jelly fills every cavity of the gear pocket and between the teeth, as the pump may not prime without it. Install the pump cover assembly screws, tightening them alternately and evenly to specifications. Finally, install the oil filter and check the oil level with the dipstick, monitoring the oil pressure gauge or warning light during initial start-up and driving; if low oil pressure is indicated, shut off the engine and inspect all work.
