Removal begins with the oil pan, followed by the oil pump pickup tube. The oil pump sprocket cover bolts are then removed, and the sprocket cover is detached. The oil pump drive chain guide nuts are loosened and the guide is slid away from the chain to put some slack in the chain. The oil pump mounting bolts are removed, and then the oil pump is detached. Caution: Do NOT try to remove the sprocket from the oil pump. Doing so might damage the oil pump center shaft. For inspection, the pump is disassembled. All parts are cleaned thoroughly and all traces of old gasket material are removed from the sealing surfaces. All parts are visually inspected for wear, cracks and other damage. Parts are replaced as necessary. The outer oil pump rotor is installed and the clearance between the outer rotor and the case, and between the rotor faces and a straightedge, is measured. The free length of the relief valve spring is measured. If the spring is too short, it is replaced. The pump cavity is packed with petroleum jelly, the rotors are installed and the pump housing halves are reassembled. The relief valve, relief spring and retainer are installed. The oil pump drive chain rollers and plates are inspected for excessive wear and damage. If the chain is worn or damaged, it is replaced. To remove the chain, the crankshaft has to be removed. For installation, the oil pump is installed on the block with the oil pump drive chain installed, but not tensioned. The pump mounting bolts are installed and tightened. The tension of the oil pump drive chain is set using a fish scale or some other suitable device that can measure pulling force. The chain guide nuts are loosened, the guide is pulled with the scale until the indicated pulling force on the scale is within the range of 4.4 to 6.6 pounds of force, and then the guide nuts are tightened securely. The pump sprocket cover is installed and the cover bolts are tightened. The oil pick-up tube and the oil pan are installed. Oil is added, the engine is started and checked for oil pressure and leaks.

Thoroughly clean all parts and remove any old gasket material from the sealing surfaces. Visually inspect all parts for wear, cracks, and damage. Replace any parts that are worn or damaged.
