- A:To remove the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module, start by relieving the system fuel pressure and disconnecting the negative battery terminal. Then, remove the fuel tank and disconnect the fuel supply line, being careful to soak up any spilled fuel. Mark the orientation of the fuel pump for correct realignment during installation. Use water pump pliers to unscrew the locknut, and if necessary, loosen it with a hammer and brass punch. Raise the pump assembly to disconnect the quick-connect fitting for the ventilation harness, and remove the pump assembly without damaging the fuel inlet strainer or the fuel level sensor float arm and float. For installation, inspect the O-ring and fuel pump inlet strainer, replacing if necessary. Insert the fuel pump assembly into the tank, connecting the ventilation hose before locking it into place. Take care not to damage the fuel inlet strainer, float arm, or float. Ensure the float arm is not bent to maintain accurate fuel level indication.
