    Q:
How to Diagnose and Replace the ESC Knock Sensor and Module on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
This is because; today's octane numbers in gasoline are not always constant, and they can lead into detonation in an engine otherwise referred to as spark knock The Electronic Spark Control (ESC) system is thus aim at retarding the spark timing up to 20 degrees to avoid spark knock and therefore enables maximum spark advance for driveability and fuel economy. Knock sensor, marked as ESC, is mounted on the left side of the block ahead of the oil filter on the V6 engine Transmitting voltage of 8 to 10 volts to the PCM when no spark knock is detected to allow normal advance. If there is an excessive vibration, the ESC module switches off the PCM circuit hence, the voltage at PCM terminal B7 dives to zero which then leads to the PCM retarding the EST distributor until spark knock is sensed. If the knock sensor signal from the ESC is not working or the ground to the ESC module is lost, the signal to the PCM will remain high and the retard will not be applied and there could be severe spark knock under heavy loads on the engine. Also, if the PCM is lost of the ESC signal, the PCM will continually retard EST which result in slow acceleration. This is due to spark-knock and it is solved by checking if all the electrical connectors are tight and healthy, as well as the engine ignition timing. If the timing is fine, use an oscilloscope to watch the timing marks and run the engine, gently knock the engine block in the region of the knock sensor to verify that the timing reduces and measure the resistance of the knock sensor. If the timing does not retard and the resistance is above or below the prescribed limit, then the sensor should be changed; if the resistance is within the prescribed limits, then the car should be taken for further tests. For component replacement, unplug the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, disconnect the wiring harness connecting the ESC sensor, then to the block, demount the sensor and reassemble in the reverse manner. For the ESC module, remove the battery cable, remove the engine cover, the module is at the rear of the engine compartment, disconnect the wiring, remove the bolts, and reinstall in reverse.

    Q:
How to remove and install knock sensors on Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
    A:
Take off the cable from the battery's negative terminal. The 4.3L V6 engine knock sensor is located on the back part of the engine block, to the left of the distributor. A threaded unit is screwed into a block for the knock sensor found in 1996 through 2000 models. On 2001 and later models, however, there is a knock sensor yet it is located at this point but bolted to a block. Eliminate an engine cover.Disconnect an electric contactor from a knocking sensor. Removing the shock absorber from the socket.Eliminate an electric socket by carefully screwing out its plug.Remove it with simply unscrewing it.Such are on 2018 and beyond versions of 4.3L V6 engines that have two detonation sensors positioned under each distal part of exhaust.Central bolt can be removed to take away those detectors out.First you should remove fasteners or nuts while turning them counterclockwise.Installation basically involves following removal procedures.Be carful when fixing torque either for tightening knock sensor or mounting bolt, otherwise, tightening will result in bad outcomes. For all these three engines (5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L), their right side before starting motor has got one device meant for detecting early emissions of abnormal sounds.Prior to any checks after repair work, lift car front so as to put jacks below front wheels.Turn off an electrical connector through which a knocking sensor communicates.Untwist and get rid of a shock absorber. It comes down to reversing disassembling procedure in order to install it.The only thing needed now is tightness of this component.Either way it should be done correctly only once fitted instead. In such situations never employ any sealing substance plus thread resistant material onto knocking detector or its attaching means. This kind of adjustment causes poor work rate either by tightening more than that or lesser than the needed level of a knocking sensor.

    Q:
What is the location and procedure for replacing the knock sensor module in 1988 Chevrolet C1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
For models from 1996 to 2000, the knock sensor module is located in the PCM. To replace it, remove the PCM and the knock sensor module cover. Pinch the retaining tabs and pull the knock sensor straight up to remove it. To install the knock sensor module, align the tabs with the notches on the socket and press down until the retaining tabs click into place. Finally, install the knock sensor module cover and the PCM.
