The exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor operates similarly to the Crankshaft Position sensor, producing a signal pulse four times every exhaust camshaft revolution in a four-cylinder engine or five times in a five-cylinder engine. Five-cylinder engines also have an intake CMP sensor, which produces one pulse per revolution of the camshaft. CMP sensors are not used on LH9 V8 engines with VVT (variable valve timing). On LH8 engines, the sensor is mounted on the front of the timing chain cover, and removal of the water pump is necessary for sensor replacement on some models. To replace the sensor, disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor, which is located at the right front corner of the cylinder head on inline engines. There is a CMP sensor for the intake cam on five-cylinder engines only, near the front engine lifting bracket. Remove the camshaft position sensor mounting bolt and withdraw the sensor from the cylinder head. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to install a new O-ring on the sensor before installation, and lubricate the O-ring with engine oil.
