An oxygen sensor is a galvanic battery that produces a small voltage output in response to the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases. This voltage signal is the input for the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1 that the catalyst needs for optimal operation. Vehicles with On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-11) engine management systems have the ability to verify the accuracy of the feedback loop between the oxygen sensor and the PCM. This is done by using an oxygen sensor before and after the catalytic converter to compare the oxygen content in the exhaust gases. The upstream and downstream oxygen sensors are heated to speed up warm-up time. It is important to take special care when servicing the sensors, as they are delicate and can be easily damaged. When replacing the sensors, it is recommended to start and run the engine for a short period of time to loosen the sensor. The upstream oxygen sensor is located on the left side of the exhaust manifold and can be unscrewed using an oxygen sensor socket. The downstream oxygen sensor is located behind the catalytic converter and can also be unscrewed using an oxygen sensor socket. When reinstalling the sensors, apply anti-seize compound to the threads if reusing the old sensor. Otherwise, new sensors already have anti-seize compounds on them.
