Q:
What is the purpose of the Coolant Temperature Sensor on Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
A:
The coolant temperature indicator system consists of a temperature gauge or warning light on the dashboard and a coolant temperature sensor on the engine. This sensor serves multiple purposes, acting as an information sensor for the fuel and engine control systems and as a sending unit for the temperature gauge. If an overheating indication occurs, it is important to first check the coolant level and ensure the wiring between the gauge and sensor is secure, as well as checking that all fuses are intact. Next, the operation of the coolant temperature sensor should be checked, and if it is found to be defective, it should be replaced. A faulty sensor should trigger a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and illuminate the CHECK ENGINE light. If the sensor is functioning properly, it is recommended to have the temperature gauge checked by a dealer service department or a properly equipped repair shop, which will require the use of a scan tool to access the information processed by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Q:
How to replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor for Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
A:
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor, a resistor which varies the value of its resistance in accordance with temperature changes. The change in the resistance values will directly affect the voltage signal from the sensor to the PCM. As the sensor temperature increases, the resistance values will decrease. Conversely, as the sensor temperature decreases, the resistance values will increase. To replace the ECT sensor, particularly on 5.3L engines where it is mounted in the front of the driver's side cylinder head, first drain the cooling system. Then, disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor harness and carefully unscrew the sensor from the engine. The sensor itself is threaded into the cylinder head at the right-rear on inline engines. If the new sensor doesn't have a sealing compound on its threads, wrap the threads with Teflon sealing tape to prevent leakage. Installation is simply the reverse of removal, and don't forget to refill the cooling system.

Q:
What should be done if the sensor is functioning properly but the temperature gauge is not accurate of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer? Posted by Customer
A:
If the sensor is functioning properly but the temperature gauge is not accurate, it may be necessary to have the temperature gauge checked using a scan tool to access the information processed by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Q:
How to replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor on Chevrolet Trailblazer? Posted by Customer
A:
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor, a resistor which changes its resistance value in accordance with temperature changes. The change in resistance values directly affects the voltage signal from the sensor to the PCM. As the sensor temperature increases, the resistance values decrease and vice versa. To replace it, first drain the cooling system. Then, disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor harness. On six-cylinder engines, remove the alternator. Carefully unscrew the sensor from the engine. On six-cylinder engines, the ECT sensor is threaded into the engine block. On VB engines, the ECT sensor is at the front of the left cylinder head, above the Number One spark plug. If the new sensor doesn't have a sealing compound on its threads, wrap the threads with Teflon sealing tape to prevent leakage. Installation is the reverse of removal.
