Q:
What is the purpose and location of the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor? Posted by Customer
A:
The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is a crucial timing device used by the PCM to calculate engine speed and piston position. It is responsible for controlling ignition and injector timing. On SOHC engines, the CMP sensor is located at the rear of the cylinder head, while on DOHC engines, it is bolted to the sensor case. The CMP sensor consists of a signal rotor and a signal generator, which includes a magnet and a Hall effect element. The signal rotor has four poles, one for each piston, and as it turns, it applies magnetic flux to the Hall effect element. This generates a voltage signal that is sent to the PCM for engine speed and piston position calculations. In 1990 and later Samurai models and 1992 through 1998 Sidekick/Tracker models, the CMP sensor is located inside the distributor. However, in 1999 and later Vitara/Tracker models, the CMP sensor is bolted to the back of the cylinder head. To check the CMP sensor, inspect the sensor and its electrical connector, ensure proper voltage supply, and test the voltage signal. If the CMP sensor is defective, it should be replaced.
