This is a hypoid, semi-floating type rear axle assembly in which the centerline of the pinion is located below the center line of the ring gear. The differential carrier has a pressed steel cover and the axle tubes are made of steel pressed and welded into the carrier. As a matter of choice, this model has an optional locking rear axle, which catches and harness and operates as a normal differential, but if one wheel starts slipping, multidisk clutch packs and a speed-sensitive engagement mechanism cause both axleshafts to become locked and share equal rotational force with both of the wheels.
