To remove and install an axle shaft, start by raising and supporting the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly, and install a modified boot protector on the outer CV-joint. Insert a drift punch into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning, then remove the hub nut. Disconnect the stabilizer link if necessary. Remove the ball joint cotter pin and nut, and loosen the ball joint in the knuckle using a suitable tool. Use a prybar to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Partially install the hub nut to protect the threads, then remove the axle shaft from the hub using a suitable tool. Move the strut and knuckle rearward. Separate the axle shaft from the transaxle using a prybar and wood block fulcrum to protect the transaxle case. To install, start by installing the right side axle shaft if applicable. Install the axle shaft into the transaxle by tapping it until seated, and verify that the snap ring is seated. Install the axle shaft into the hub and bearing assembly, and loosely install a new hub nut. Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle and install the nut. Tighten the ball joint nut to the specified torque, and install a new cotter pin. Insert a drift punch into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning, and tighten the hub nut to the specified torque. Connect the stabilizer link if it was removed, remove the boot protector, and if applicable, remove any installation tools. Finally, install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.

After raising the vehicle, the wheel and brake drum should be removed.

Before installing the new bearing, make sure to install the retainer plate and the seal to the shaft first.

Just take up the weight, but do not raise sufficiently to take the weight of the vehicle from the frame stands.
