Q:
How to replace spark plugs on Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the spark plugs, first, identify their location threaded into the top (3.6L V6) or the side (3.4L V6) of each cylinder head; if you have a 3.6L V6, remove the air intake duct for access. You'll need specific tools, including a spark plug socket, extensions, and a gap gauge for gap adjustment. Ensure the engine is fully cooled before starting. Inspect the new plugs for defects and adjust their gaps using the gauge; the gap should match the specifications provided. Carefully bend the side electrode, if necessary, without damaging the porcelain insulator. Avoid scraping the platinum or iridium coating on the electrodes. If your engine is a 3.6L V6, remove the ignition coils; for a 3.4L V6 engine, remove the spark plug wires by twisting the boots and pulling them off. Use compressed air to remove any debris around the spark plugs to prevent it from falling into the cylinders. Place the spark plug socket over the plug, turn it counterclockwise to remove it, and compare it with the chart for the engine's running condition. Before installing new plugs, apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to the threads. Thread a new plug into the hole and tighten it with a torque wrench or a ratchet, using a short length of rubber hose for assistance. Lastly, reinstall the ignition coil or reattach the spark plug wire for each plug, repeating the procedure for the remaining spark plugs.
