Q:
How to remove and install timing chain and Sprocket on DOHC engine? Posted by Customer
A:
Before undertaking the removal and installation of timing components, exercise extreme caution as the timing system is intricate and mistakes can lead to severe engine damage. If you lack experience in such repairs, it's advisable to consult an expert. Begin by removing the camshaft cover and timing chain cover. Rotate the crankshaft so that the key aligns with the stationary mark on the block, ensuring that the camshaft sprocket marks align with those on the cylinder head, and that the arrow mark on the idler sprocket points upwards, confirming that the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC). Remove the timing chain tensioner adjuster bolts and nut, release tension, and remove the adjuster. Next, using a wrench to immobilize each camshaft, remove the sprocket retaining bolts from the intake and exhaust camshafts. Remove the camshaft timing chain and sprockets, taking care not to turn the camshafts independently of the crankshaft to avoid damage. For the bigger timing chain, idler sprocket, and crankshaft sprocket, remove the camshaft cover and timing chain cover, and once again bring the No. 1 piston to TDC. Remove the small timing chain and camshaft sprockets, followed by the timing chain tensioner and guide. Remove the timing chain tensioner, idler sprocket, timing chain, and crankshaft sprocket. When inspecting components, ensure they are free of oil and dirt and check for excessive wear or damage. Replace worn or damaged parts. For installation, align the crankshaft sprocket key with the block's stationary timing mark, and install the crankshaft sprocket with the match mark facing outward. Lubricate the idler sprocket bushing and install it along with the idler sprocket. Install the big timing chain, ensuring alignment with match marks. Lubricate components, release the tensioner plunger, and secure it. Install the timing chain guide, ensuring alignment, and verify that all marks remain aligned. For the small timing chain and camshaft sprockets, align the crankshaft sprocket key, arrow mark on the idler sprocket, and knock pins on the camshafts. Install the small timing chain and sprockets, aligning the yellow plate with the arrow mark on the idler sprocket and dark blue plates with arrow marks on the camshaft sprockets. Tighten the sprocket bolts while immobilizing the camshafts. Depress the tensioner plunger, install the tensioner, and tighten its fasteners. Rotate the crankshaft for two complete revolutions, verifying timing mark alignment. Lubricate all components with clean engine oil.

Q:
What components may need to be removed if the timing belt is to be replaced for the 1999 Chevrolet Tracker? Posted by Customer
A:
If the timing belt is to be replaced, you may need to slide off the crankshaft sprocket and belt guide. If you plan to replace the camshaft oil seal, you should also remove the camshaft sprocket and cover.
