Q:
How do you remove the fuel tank? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the fuel tank, start by relieving fuel tank pressure by removing the fuel tank filler cap and disconnecting the negative battery terminal. Then, relieve the fuel system pressure and drain the fuel tank by siphoning or using a hand pump. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on jackstands. For the left tank on 2002 and earlier models with an automatic transmission, remove the left muffler; on 2003 and later models, remove both mufflers and the left rear wheel. Proceed to remove the left rear inner fender panel and, for 2003 and later models with automatic transmissions, the driveshaft. Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel supply line quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump module. Loosen the hose clamps and disconnect the fuel filler neck hose and EVAP system breather hose from the tank. Disconnect the fuel pump module electrical connectors and fuel feed lines. On 2002 and earlier models, disconnect the fuel tank crossover tube and EVAP hose T connector fitting, then remove the fuel tank strap/shield and take the tank out of the vehicle. On 2003 and later models, lower the fuel tank about one inch by loosening the fuel tank strap/shield. Disengage the fuel tank crossover tube connector retainer and remove the crossover tube. Disconnect the EVAP hose connector fitting at the left fuel tank and remove the tank by loosening the strap/shield. For the right tank on 2002 and earlier models with an automatic transmission, remove the right muffler and then the right-rear wheel and inner fender panel. On 2003 and later models with automatic transmissions, remove the driveshaft and the EVAP canister access cover to disconnect the EVAP canister hoses. For all models, disconnect the electrical connector and fuel supply line quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump module and then the fuel pump module electrical connectors and fuel feed lines. On 2002 and earlier models, disconnect the fuel tank crossover tube and EVAP hose T connector fitting, remove the fuel tank strap/shield, and take the tank out. On 2003 and later models, disconnect the crossover tube clamp above the transmission, disengage the fuel tank crossover tube connector retainer, remove the crossover tube, and disconnect the EVAP hose connector fitting at the right fuel tank. Remove the fuel tank strap/shield and take the tank out. To install, follow the reverse of the removal process, ensuring proper tightening of the fuel tank strap bolts and correctly aligning the crossover tube on 2003 and later models. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and run the fuel pump for 2 seconds, then off for 10 seconds, and finally turn the ignition on again to check for fuel leaks.
