Q:
How do you remove and replace the thermostat in a Cadillac CTS? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and replace the thermostat in a vehicle, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and draining the cooling system. If the coolant is still in good condition, it can be saved and reused. On V6 engine models, loosen the radiator hose clamp and detach the hose from the thermostat outlet pipe. Remove the bolt holding the outlet pipe, oil dipstick tube, and engine lifting bracket, then pull the outlet pipe and O-rings from the thermostat housing. Remove the intake manifold and the thermostat housing fasteners to detach the thermostat housing cover and thermostat. Press down on the thermostat and rotate it to clear the locking ears on the housing, then remove it. Disconnect the coolant expansion tank hose from the thermostat housing and remove the coolant pipe-to-thermostat housing fasteners. Remove the coolant pipe front and rear fasteners, as well as the pipe to thermostat housing fasteners, and remove the pipes from the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat cover fasteners and detach the cover and thermostat. Press down on the thermostat and rotate it to clear the locking ears on the housing, then remove it. Remove the cooling fan assembly and disconnect the radiator hose clamp from the thermostat housing. Remove the bolts and lift the thermostat housing off, tapping it with a soft-face hammer if necessary. On 6.2L engines, remove the thermostat from the housing. To install the new thermostat, clean the sealing surfaces and inspect the hoses. Insert the pin at the end of the thermostat into the center recess of the housing and depress the tabs on the sides of the thermostat, turning it until the tabs align with the ears on the housing. Install the thermostat housing using a new gasket and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specifications. Install new O-rings to the outlet pipe and insert it into the thermostat housing. On V8 engine models, depress the tabs on the sides of the thermostat and rotate it until the tabs align with the ears on the housing. Install a new rubber gasket or O-ring on the thermostat and install it in the lower housing, spring-end first. Install the thermostat housing cover and bolts, tightening them to the proper torque specifications. Install a new O-ring onto the coolant tube and insert it into the housing, tightening the bolts to the torque specifications. Carefully position the cover and install the bolts, being careful not to over-tighten them. Finally, refill the cooling system, start the engine, and check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.

Q:
How do you remove the Thermostat on Cadillac Escalade? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the 4.3L V6, 5.3L, and 6.2L V8 engines, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and draining the cooling system. Then, remove the air intake duct and resonator assembly. Squeeze the hose clamps and detach the radiator hose and expansion tank hose from the thermostat housing cover, and if necessary, cut off old or deteriorated hoses and replace them. Remove the bolts and detach the thermostat housing/thermostat assembly, tapping it with a soft-face hammer if it's stuck. During installation, clean the mating surfaces of the coolant manifold and thermostat housing cover, and install a new O-ring seal to the thermostat housing. Attach the thermostat/housing to the coolant manifold and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Reconnect the hoses to the thermostat housing and refill the cooling system. For the 6.0L V8 engine, follow similar steps but also disconnect the lower radiator hose and remove the thermostat housing cover from the engine. Install a new rubber O-ring around the thermostat and place it into the coolant manifold. Attach the thermostat housing onto the coolant manifold and tighten the bolts. The remaining steps are the reverse of the removal procedure, and don't forget to refill the cooling system.

Q:
How to check and replace a thermostat in a cooling system on Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe,GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali and Yukon XL? Posted by Customer
A:
Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, it is important to check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and temperature gauge (or light) operation. If the engine seems to be taking a long time to warm up, the thermostat is probably stuck open and should be replaced with a new one. On the other hand, if the engine runs hot, the thermostat is probably stuck closed, preventing the coolant inside the engine from escaping to the radiator. To remove and install the thermostat, follow the specific instructions for either the V6 or V8 model. It is important to clean the mating surfaces, install a new rubber O-ring around the thermostat, and check and replace hoses and clamps as necessary. After installation, refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check carefully for leaks.

Q:
How to remove and replace a thermostat in a Chevrolet Camaro's cooling system? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Drain the cooling system. If the coolant is relatively new and still in good condition, save it and reuse it. Remove the oil filler cap then lift the front engine cover up and off of the ball studs. Remove the two plastic retaining pins at the rear of the intake manifold and slide the rear cover off the manifold. Remove the coolant pipe front and rear fasteners then remove the coolant pipe-to-thermostat housing fasteners. Remove the coolant pipe from the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat cover fasteners and lift off the cover. If the cover is stuck, tap it with a soft-face hammer to jar it loose. Be prepared for some coolant to spill as the O-ring seal is broken. If the thermostat is the type that is not attached to the cover, remove it from the housing, noting how it is installed. If the thermostat is the type that is attached to the cover, press down on the thermostat and rotate it until the tabs clear the locking ears on the housing. Remove the thermostat from the housing. If the thermostat lower housing must be removed, remove the coolant pipe-to-lower housing bolts then remove the housing bolts. For V8 engines, remove the drivebelts. Disconnect the radiator hose clamp from the thermostat housing and remove the hose. Remove the bolts and lift the thermostat housing off. It may be necessary to tap it with a soft-face hammer to break the gasket seal then remove the thermostat from the housing. Clean the sealing surfaces. Inspect the hoses, replacing them as necessary. For V6 engines with thermostat mounted in cover, depress the tabs on the sides of the thermostat and rotate the thermostat until the tabs are aligned with the ears on the housing. For all other models, install a new rubber seal on the thermostat, then install the thermostat in the housing, spring-end first. Install the thermostat housing cover and bolts, then tighten the bolts to the torque. On V6 models, install a new O-ring onto the coolant tube and insert the tube into the housing. Tighten the coolant tube bolts to the torque. Installation is the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature, then check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.

Q:
How do you remove and install a thermostat on Chevrolet Corvette? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the thermostat, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Next, drain the cooling system, saving the coolant if it is still in good condition. Then, disconnect the radiator hose clamp from the thermostat housing and remove the hose. Remove the bolts and lift off the thermostat housing cover, tapping it if necessary to break the gasket seal. Finally, remove the thermostat from the housing. To install the thermostat, begin by cleaning the sealing surfaces and inspecting the hoses for replacement if needed. Install a new rubber seal on the thermostat and place it in the housing, ensuring the spring-end is first. Then, install the thermostat housing cover and bolts, tightening them to the specified torque. Reassemble the remaining components in the reverse order of removal. Refill the cooling system and start the engine, allowing it to reach normal operating temperature. Check for any leaks and ensure the thermostat is functioning properly.

Q:
How do I diagnose and replace a thermostat in the cooling system for Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
A:
Before assuming the thermostat is to blame for a cooling system problem, it is important to check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and temperature gauge (or light) operation. If the engine seems to be taking a long time to warm up, indicating a stuck open thermostat, it should be replaced with a new one. On the other hand, if the engine runs hot and the lower radiator hose is not hot, it suggests a stuck closed thermostat, which also requires replacement. However, if the lower radiator hose is hot, it indicates that the coolant is flowing and the thermostat is open. To replace the thermostat, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and draining the cooling system. Then, locate the thermostat housing by following the lower radiator hose to the engine. Loosen the hose clamp and detach the radiator hose from the thermostat housing, replacing it if necessary. Remove the bolts and detach the thermostat housing, cleaning the mating surfaces on the engine and the housing. Install a new o-ring in the housing and reattach it to the engine, tightening the bolts to the proper torque specifications. Finally, refill the cooling system, check for leaks, and repeat the steps to ensure the repairs have resolved the previous problem(s).
