This procedure includes the removal and installation of the camshaft on 16-valve engines. To begin, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and remove the radiator. Set the number one piston at top dead center and remove the camshaft cover. Loosen the lock nuts and back off the valve adjustment screws. Remove the timing belt and camshaft sprocket. For eight-valve engines, remove the ten rocker arm shaft retaining screws and number the rocker arms. Push the rear of one rocker arm shaft until it protrudes enough at the front to grip, then slowly pull each rocker arm shaft out the front of the engine. For sixteen-valve engines, remove the radiator grille, hood latch, front upper member, distributor, and housing. Remove the camshaft cover, timing belt, and camshaft sprocket. Reverse the order to loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts, then remove them and lift the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft off the cylinder head. Remove the timing belt inner cover and unscrew the rocker arm shaft plug. Mark the intake and exhaust rocker arms and remove the intake rocker arms. Remove the rocker arm shaft bolts and push the rocker arm shaft out of the cylinder head. Slowly pull the rocker arm shaft out the front of the engine and lift the exhaust valve rocker arms and wave washers out of the head. Thoroughly clean the parts and measure the inside diameter of each rocker arm and the outside diameter of the shaft. Compare the measurements and visually inspect the rocker arms and springs. Replace any components that are not within specifications or damaged. To install, lubricate the shafts, rocker arms, and camshaft journals and lobes. Slowly push a rocker arm shaft into the cylinder head while guiding it into the rocker arms and springs or washers. Install the intake rocker arms, then the camshaft and bearing caps. Apply a thin layer of anaerobic sealant to the rear bearing cap before installation. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the specified sequence. Install the retaining screws for the rocker arm components and tighten them. Adjust the valves and reinstall the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
