Obvious damage and signs of wear should be checked for in the seat belts, buckles, latch plates and guide loops. The seat belt reminder light should come on when the key is turned to the Run or Start position, and a chime should also sound. In a sudden stop or impact, the seat belts lock but move freely during normal driving. Make sure that retractors return the belt against your chest while driving and that the belt fully rewinds when it is unlatched from the buckle. Should any of these checks indicate a problem with the seat belt system, replace parts as required. Check air bag covers for damage or warping on air bag equipped models.
