Q:
How do you check the Fan Clutch and Radiator fan on Chevrolet Trailblazer? Posted by Customer
A:
The vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with electro-viscous PCM controlled fan clutches. For safety purposes, it is advised to remove the key from the ignition switch. To begin the check, visually inspect the radiator fan blades for cracks or damage, and replace any fan that shows signs of either. Wiggle the fan blade from side-to-side, ensuring there is 1/4-inch or less play in the fan. If play is excessive, replace the clutch. Additionally, inspect the electro-viscous clutch for signs of leakage and proper tightness to the water pump, replacing it if leakage is present. Turn the fan blades and note the resistance, which should be less with a cold engine. Drive the vehicle until the engine is warmed up, then shut it off and remove the key. Turn the fan blades again and observe a noticeable increase in resistance. If the fan clutch fails this check or is locked up solid, replacement is indicated.

Q:
How do I remove the Fan Clutch,Fan Shroud and Radiator fan? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the intake air baffle, start by removing the bolts and push pins that attach it to the radiator support. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines at the engine bracket and fan shroud, and also disconnect the electro-viscous clutch electrical connector from the shroud. Remove the upper radiator hose from the radiator, being prepared for coolant spillage. Use a large wrench to remove the fan clutch retaining nut and detach the fan clutch assembly from the engine. If the water pump pulley slips on the belt, remove the drivebelts and use a strap wrench to hold the pulley. Unclip the shroud from the radiator side panels and tilt the condenser and radiator forward, with the help of someone if needed. Lift the radiator fan and shroud as one unit, while holding the condenser and radiator in the forward position. If necessary, unbolt the fan from the clutch. When installing, tighten the fan hub nut to the appropriate torque specifications. Finally, check the coolant and add as necessary to bring it to the appropriate level.
