Q:
How to inspect and clean the throttle body? Posted by Customer
A:
During the inspection of the throttle, it is important to verify that the throttle linkage operates smoothly. To remove any carbon and residue build-up, the air intake duct should be removed from the throttle body and the throttle body bore should be inspected. If it is dirty, it can be cleaned using a solvent or carburetor cleaner that is safe for oxygen sensor systems and catalytic converters. To begin the removal process, the cable should be disconnected from the negative battery terminal. The air intake duct and resonator should be removed on 2.2 or 2.4L models, while on 2.0L models, only the intake hose at the throttle body needs to be removed. The throttle body connector(s) should be disconnected, along with any throttle body hoses and vacuum hoses. On 2.0L models, the EVAP canister purge hose should also be disconnected. On 2003 and 2004 models, the accelerator cable and cruise control cable, if equipped, should be disconnected. The throttle body can then be removed by taking out the mounting bolts. The throttle body O-ring should be inspected and replaced if necessary. If needed, the throttle body can be cleaned. During installation, it is important to tighten the throttle body mounting bolts to the proper torque specifications. After reconnecting the battery, the PCM will need to relearn its former driveability and performance characteristics. Finally, the engine should be started to verify that the throttle body operates correctly and that there are no air leaks.
