    Q:
How to CV boot replacement on Cadillac DTS? Posted by Customer
    A:
When replacing a CV Boot, the first thing you should do is to consider all available options before you start. An entire rebuilt drive axle can be acquired on an exchange basis which saves time and effort. Whether one chooses to go with the second option, it is important to evaluate the price and availability of parts before vehicle disassembly commence. Initial step for inner CV Boot replacement involves cutting off boot retaining clamps and sliding the housing off spider assembly. Then inboard end of drive axle is moved toward center of tri-pot assembly and the relation is marked on outer race. The stop-ring ends are spread apart then slid towards center shaft. Push the spider assembly back to remove retaining ring then pry it off. When removing spider from drive axle, ensure that bearings are held in place by tape or cloth if necessary. If spider sticks to shaft tap it gently with a hammer and a brass punch until it comes off. Lastly, slide stop-ring and boot off axle shaft, clean housing and spider assembly, replace any worn bearings or components as needed. This process includes applying CV joint grease, installing bearing blocks (for square tri-pot bearing designs) and securing boot clamps using special pliers. For an outside CV joint, cut the band that holds the boot to the shaft and slip it towards the middle of axel shaft; after that use snap-ring pliers in order to spread snap-ring ears so that it can allow joint slide right out of shaft. Inner race and cage should be tilted thus removing each ball bearing carefully from old boot; this must be done cautiously when taking out the old boot while tilting them one at a time by inner race and cage as well as cleaning all parts with solvent for any damage or wear inspection being carried out as far as such components are concerned. To reassemble, you need to line up inner race again with cage by installing bearings into windows while using snap-ring pliers so as to secure new snap-ring. The grease needs to be injected through hole in the spline and it might be forced into joint with a wooden dowel. After that, put the small clamp and boot back onto drive axle thereby filling boot with grease up to end of axle. Place the CV joint assembly on top of drive axle such that by aligning splines, this can be accomplished through tapping it onto drive axle using a soft-face hammer until the snap-ring is seated in a groove. Ensure that the boot is properly seated in the groove and install the retaining clamps. Equalize pressure within boot before securing these clamps on the boot using specialized pliers for this purpose which are usually available at most auto parts stores.

    Q:
What is the importance of CV boots and how should they be maintained on Chevrolet Equinox? Posted by Customer
    A:
The CV boots are essential in preventing dirt, water, and other foreign materials from entering and damaging the constant velocity (CV) joints. Since oil and grease tend to wear out the material of the boot, it should be washed using soap and water. The outer CV boot wears out earlier than the inner one because it is constantly moving back-and-forth with the steering action of the front hub; hence, there is a need for regular inspection. Additionally, one should also inspect them for cuts, cracks, or clamps that may have become loose. This includes checking both inner and outer CV boots for leaking lubricant, or any signs of worn clamps such as cracks present in them. There is no difference between them and all-wheel-drive models that have driveaxles at their rear ends as well. Replacements are needed if they have any signs of cracking or if there is any leaked lubricant.

    Q:
How to replace CV Boot on Chevrolet Impala? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before starting the job, it is important to explore all options if the CV joint boots need to be replaced. Complete rebuilt driveaxles are available on an exchange basis, which can save time and effort. Before one starts disassembling the vehicle it is necessary to find out the cost of parts and availability. To protect axleshaft, the drive axle should be placed in a vise lined with rags when replacing the inner CV joint boot. Excessive play and smooth operation should be checked on the CV joint. The joint needs disassembly, cleaning and inspection for damage in case its boot is torn. The process demands one to remove boot retaining clamps, slide housing and bushing off spider assembly, as well as removing spider assembly from axleshaft. Then slide stop ring off axleshaft, clean old grease out of housing and spider assembly. Each bearing was removed with care before being cleaned up and inspected too. Applying CV joint grease onto inner bearing surfaces then slided bearing over them should follow this step. Reinstall the boot, stop ring, Spider Bearing, Spider Retaining Ring and Spider Assembly respectively. It is recommended that grease should be packed into the housing while seating boot in housing and axial seal grooves. The proper length for CV joint shall be adjusted by fitting boot clamps on it tightly enough. When replacing outer CV Boot first cut off the clamp retaining boot on it then slide back Boot itself; then spread apart ends of internal snap-ring from C.V joint so that C.V joint may slide off shaft at last.Inner race must be pressed down for removing ball bearings where balls are later pried out of cage These races will tilt as well as rotate thereby removing them from outer race . All parts must be cleaned up properly before checking whether there is any damaged part among them or not.The Assembly should be reinstalled by lowering it into housing rotating it and pressing balls into cage windows A new snap-ring is installed and grease applied through the splined hole. It should be positioned on driveaxle and driven onto it with a soft-face hammer using CV joint assembly. The boot should be seated and the retaining clamp should be installed. Finally, to tighten the boot clamps.

    Q:
What should you consider before replacing CV boots on Pontiac G6? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before working on CV joint boots, look at all avenues of available options as complete rebuilt CV axles can be gotten on the exchange basis. However, before pulling the car apart you should consider what the part will cost and if they will be easily available. Start by detaching the CV axle and then clamping it between the jaws of a vise and putting a piece of rag on the jaws of the vise. Check the amount of radial endurance for the CV joint, since more than 0.04mm of play may mean that it is worn, and check how smoothly it operates throughout its arc. When a boot is torn, the joint has to be dismantled and before replacement, the components have to be cleaned to check for signs of deterioration that might have been caused by loss of lubricant or contamination. To remove the inner boot, one has to remove the boot retaining clamps, slide the spider housing off the spider assembly, and then pull the boot to the middle of the CV axle. Thereafter place each end of the stop ring away from each other and pull it towards the center of the shaft, in order to remove the retaining ring tap gently the spider off from the axleshaft with the help of a brass punch while holding the bearings in position. Remove old grease, detachment of the spider assembly, and check out the elements that are used for operation. Smear the inner bearing surfaces with CV joint grease, wind tape round the splines of the axleshaft and fit the new boot & clamps. In the case of the outer CV joint boot removal and replacement, there are metallic retaining clamps that are cut off and the boot is slid back and the CV joint is pulled off the shaft. Gently take out all the ball bearings and wash all the part and have a look for any signs of wear and tear. Replace the joint by fitting the inner race and cage together, putting in the new grease and the snap-ring. Finally, the car should be positioned and the CV joint assembly positioned on the CV axle along with the boot and fastened using retaining clamps.

    Q:
What role do CV boots play in protecting constant velocity joints, and how can their maintenance prevent premature deterioration on Pontiac G6? Posted by Customer
    A:
The CV boots are significant because they keep elements like dirt, water, and other materials away from the constant velocity (CV) joints and therefore helps protect them. Due to oil and grease, the material used in developing the boot is subject to decay and therefore it is recommended that the boots should be washed using soapy water. The outer CV boot has a rather shorter lifespan due to constant pivoting motion after the steering action of the front hub. This is due to the fact that boots are put under highly intense pressures and therefore several techniques used to determine any crack or leakage on all boots include putting flex on the boots to see evident tears, cracks, or loose clamps which require replacement.

    Q:
Why are CV boots important on Chevrolet Traverse? Posted by Customer
    A:
The CV boots are very important because they prevent dirt, water, and foreign material from entering and damaging the constant velocity (CV) joints. Oil and grease can cause the boot material to deteriorate prematurely, so it's a good idea to wash the boots with soap and water. Because it constantly pivots back and forth following the steering action of the front hub, the outer CV boot wears out sooner and should be inspected regularly. Inspect the boots for tears and cracks as well as loose clamps. Inspect the inner and outer CV boots for loose clamps, cracks, or signs of leaking lubricant. All-wheel drive models have CV boots at the rear too. If there is any evidence of cracks or leaking lubricant, they must be replaced.
