Q:
How to replace CV joints or boots? Posted by Customer
A:
When replacing CV joints or boots, it's advisable to explore all available options and assess the cost and parts availability before proceeding. For the inner CV joint, remove the driveaxle and secure it in a vise with wood-lined jaws. Inspect the CV joints for excessive radial play and ensure smooth operation throughout their range. If a torn boot is encountered, disassemble the joint, clean the components, and check for lubrication loss and contamination. If the CV joint is in good condition, lubricate it with CV joint grease and install a new boot. To disassemble, cut and discard the boot clamps, then remove the boot and CV joint housing, taking care to retain the rollers on the spider trunnion. Eliminate the spider assembly snap-ring, mark the tri-pot for proper reassembly, and use a brass drift and hammer to remove the spider assembly. Afterward, clean all components and inspect for wear, replacing the entire driveaxle assembly if any part of the inner CV joint is worn. For reassembly, protect the axleshaft splines with tape, slide the clamps and CV Boot onto the shaft, and install the tri-pot spider with the chamfer facing the shaft. Tap it into place, apply grease, and insert it into the housing. Ensure proper boot positioning and pressure equalization, then attach the new clamps. As for the outer CV joint, start by cutting and discarding the boot clamps. Use a soft-faced hammer to dislodge the CV joint from the axleshaft and remove the bearing retainer clip. Slide the boot off and clean all components thoroughly. Inspect for wear, replacing the entire driveaxle assembly if any part of the outer CV joint is worn. Reassembly involves sliding a new sealing boot clamp and CV Boot onto the axleshaft, adding a new bearing retainer clip, packing the CV joint with grease, aligning the splines, and gently driving the CV joint onto the axleshaft. Ensure proper boot seating and pressure equalization, then attach the new clamps before reinstalling the driveaxle.
