Q:
How do I remove and install a Shift Cable on Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the shift cable, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, place the transmission in PARK and apply the parking brake. Block the rear wheels to prevent any accidental rolling. Carefully pry the shift cable from the ball-stud on the transmission shift lever and remove the clip to disengage the shift cable from the cable bracket on the transmission. Disengage the cable from the retainer on the underside of the floorboard and, if working on a 4WD model, disengage it from the retainers on the transfer case. Trace the cable to the cable grommet and push the grommet up and out of its hole in the floor pan. Remove the trim panel at the driver's side door hinge pillar and pull back the carpet to access the shift cable. Pry the shift cable ball socket from the shift lever ball pivot and detach the cable. Trace the cable to the cable grommet and pull it through the hole in the floor to remove it. To install and adjust the cable, ensure that both the driver's shift lever and the transmission shift lever are in the Park position. Pull up the locking tab on the secondary lock cover and slide off the cover from the primary lock. Squeeze the tabs of the primary lock to free it and pull it upward, allowing the cable's spring tension to lengthen it. Push the cable end back just enough to align with the ballstud on the transmission shift lever and snap it onto the ballstud in one movement. Push the primary lock down until its tabs lock it and slide the secondary lock over the primary lock. Finally, ensure that the transmission shifts properly into each gear range.
