    Q:
How to remove and inspect a camshaft and Lash Adjuster on Chevrolet HHR? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before undertaking the tedious process of removing and inspecting camshafts, you should gather your special tools and get some new bolts for camshaft sprockets. On a 2.0L supercharged model, start by releasing the fuel system pressure; then disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the valve cover and set the engine to TDC for cylinder number one, then rotate the crankshaft anti-clockwise until the engine is at 60 degrees before TDC with a diamond-shaped hole on an intake camshaft at 12 o'clock. One thing to remember is never remove camshafts with the engine at TDC number 1 or else valves will collide with pistons and cause damage to both parts. For these engines (2.0L Supercharged & 2.2L), remove upper timing chain guide & secure camshaft sprockets by special tool. To facilitate this process, buy a camshaft locking tool.Remove and put wingnuts on side holding forwardly moved tape-worm wheels.Possibly remove the Camshaft Position Actuators if working on vehicles built during or after 2009; otherwise remove Timing Chain Tensioner if working on vehicles built before 2008.Then disassemble cams while keeping caps marked as to location and direction in which they were removed. All rocker arms must be returned to their original position while all hydraulic lash adjusters should be placed along with corresponding rocker arms. The same procedure should also be used to lift up hydraulic lash adjusters after removing rocker arms from exhaust camshafts in order.Specially made tools hold chain tight & release actuator after loosening actuator bolts while holding wrench onto hexagon of camshaft.Ensure that timing chain remains propped up by locking devices. If removing cams check all engines for proper lubrication between hydraulic lash adjusters, rocker bearings lobes of cams, bearing journals and bearing journal oil clearance.Correct any deficiencies encountered by replacing the parts which are faulty.Prior to reinstallation of rocker arms, ensure they are well oiled together with hydraulic lash adjusters, camshaft must be lubricated and installed correctly.Slide the camshaft sprockets down, tighten new bolts to the required torque and align the slots with sprocket projections before securing the camshaft bearing caps.Adjust the bolts on parts that have been mispositioned during installation.Make sure that you remove Camshaft Locking Tool then install front and rear Camshaft Caps as guided by manufacturers' specifications.Replace upper timing chain guide and also install timing chain tensioner back.Reset&install tensioner & fit upper timing chain guide for it.Once it has gone through at least two complete revolutions check for any kind of resistance involved in making those revolutions.Go ahead to reconnect your battery in order to proceed with engine operation.

    Q:
How to remove the camshaft from the rear cylinder head in 3.5L V6 engine on Saturn Vue? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the camshaft from the rear cylinder head, first relieve the fuel system pressure. Next, remove the valve covers, followed by the timing belt, and then the rocker arms/shafts as an assembly. It is important to check camshaft end play before proceeding. After that, remove the camshaft sprockets and the battery, disconnect the wire harness retainers from the fuse block, release the plastic clips, lift the fuse block, and move it to the rear. Remove the battery tray, drain the coolant, and take off the upper radiator hose. Remove the EGR valve, then either remove the under hood fuse box or position it out of the way, disconnect the interfering engine wiring harness connectors, and move the harnesses aside. Disconnect the fuel supply line at the fuel rail. For both camshafts, remove the camshaft retainer plate and its O-ring, then carefully slide the camshaft out of the cylinder head, ensuring not to nick the bearings. During inspection, keep track of the components' locations, remove the rocker arms and springs from the rocker shafts, and bolt the bare rocker shafts to the cylinder head, tightening them to the specified torque. Mount a dial indicator to contact the nose of the camshaft and pry the camshaft forwards and back, recording the movement. If the end play is excessive, install a new retainer plate and check again; if still excessive, the camshaft must be replaced. Remove the retainer plate and slide the camshaft out, measuring the journal diameters and lobe heights while checking for visual signs of wear. The camshaft oil seal should be replaced whenever a camshaft is removed or replaced, so remove the timing belt rear covers to access the seals, pry out the old seal, lubricate the lips with engine oil, and install a new seal squarely to the same depth as the original. Clean the camshaft with solvent, lubricate the journals and lobes with camshaft installation lubricant, and carefully install the camshaft into the cylinder head. Lubricate and install a new O-ring on the camshaft retainer plate, install the retainer plate, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Reinstall the remaining components in reverse order of removal, refill the cooling system if it was drained, and run the engine at low speed for five minutes to allow air to bleed from the lost motion assemblies, checking for leaks and proper operation. Some tappet noise may occur during the first few minutes of operation, and if it continues, it may indicate a problem with one of the lost motion assemblies.
