- A:Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the engine cover. If you need more room to work, remove the air intake duct or resonator from the throttle body. On 7.4L VB engines, push the engine wiring harness aside to gain access to the ignition coil. For 4.3L V6 (2014 and earlier) and 5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L V8 engines, disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coil and from the ignition control module and disconnect the high-tension cable from the coil high-tension terminal. Remove the ignition coil/module bracket mounting bolts and remove the coil, module and mounting bracket from the engine as a single assembly. Place the coil/module/mounting bracket assembly on a workbench. If you haven't already done so, remove the Ignition Control Driver (ICD) module or Ignition Control Module (ICM) from the mounting bracket. The coil is attached to the bracket by a pair of rivets. To separate the coil from the bracket, drill out the centers of both rivets with an appropriate drill bit, then use a punch to knock out the rivets. Attach the ignition coil to the bracket using screws. Note: Screws should be provided with the new ignition coil. Reattach the ignition module to the bracket. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. For 4.3L V6 (2018 and later) and 4.BL, 5.3L, 6.0L V8, disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil that you wish to replace. Remove the ignition coil mounting bolts and remove the coil from the coil mounting bracket. If you want to remove all of the coils from the valve cover, disconnect the electrical connectors from all the coils, then remove the coil mounting bracket nuts and lift the coil assembly from the valve cover.
