    Q:
How to remove and install the throttle cable from the throttle body and accelerator pedal on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
First of all, it is necessary to pull the throttle cable retaining clip on the throttle body throttle shaft lever arm out to release the throttle cable. Then chock the wheels and start to turn the rear throttle body throttle shaft lever forward a little and unplug the cable to the throttle. Next, undo the plastic cable retainer from the bracket on the intake manifold, and remove the body sealing compound around the plastic cable retainer at the firewall plate; pull the tabs at the top and bottom of the retainer to disconnect the former from the latter. After that, the throttle cable can be disconnected from the accelerator pedal; to do this, one should pull the small plastic retainer, which is located at the upper part of the pedal lever, backward and lift the cable upwards removing it from the groove of the lever. If one wants to remove, then just disconnect the wire while for connection one has to revert the whole process of removing. Make certain that the proper replacement cable is used, since this is a particular length, with no development connections necessary. After assembly, ensure that the accelerator linkage moves smoothly between the closed and wide open position without binding, this to be done by checking the correct operation of the linkage when opening and closing the accelerator pedal, in instances where binding is detected the cable routing should be Checked for kinks.

    Q:
What are the functions and adjustment procedures of the throttle cable on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Indeed, the throttle cable controls line pressure, shift feel and shift timing, as well as part throttle and detent downshifts, and performs the functions of the vacuum modulator and downshift cable of other transmissions. The throttle cable goes to the throttle lever and bracket assembly at the transmission to the throttle idler lever for L4 engines or directly to carburetor/TBI throttle lever for V6 and VS engines and thru throttle cable and the adjuster mounted on a bracket near the carburetor or throttle body. The throttle cable requires fine tuning once disconnected from the carburetor/TBI unit and reconnected and this is done when the engine is off. For the carbureted and TBI models, the air cleaner should be removed, all the hoses should be labeled in order to be reattached easily. At the throttle cable adjuster assembly, there is a metal readjusting tab; this tab has to be pushed down and locked while the motion of the cable housing into the slider continues until it reaches the collar; the tab may then be unlocked. For V6 and V8 engines, by opening the carburetor/TBI lever manually but to the full throttle stop position will let the cable to ratchet through the slider and it will adjust itself automatically and finally the carburetor lever has to be released. L4 engines: For the same automatic readjustment as described above, the idler lever must be turned to maximum travel stop position and to adjust the throttle cable, the TBI lever must be avoided but rather rotate the idler lever. Last is the road test of the vehicle; however, if one cannot be done, or only full throttle shift is felt, then the dealer should be sought for further examination.
