Q:
How to remove and install the steering gear? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rack and pinion, start by loosening the front wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the wheels and the under-vehicle splash shield, as well as the skid plate bolts and skid plate if applicable. Remove the rack and pinion crossmember and mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft coupler to the rack and pinion input shaft before removing the pinch bolt. Detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles and position a drain pan under the rack and pinion. Remove the bolt securing the power steering pressure and return lines, and cap the lines to prevent leakage. Finally, unscrew the mounting nuts, remove the washers, and slide the bolts out to lower the rack and pinion from the vehicle. To install the rack and pinion, reverse the removal steps and ensure all fasteners are tightened to the specified torque. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to the torque specifications, check the power steering fluid level, add some if necessary, and bleed the system.
