    Q:
How to remove and install an exhaust manifold in V8 engine on Chevrolet Colorado? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before proceeding to the process of the removal of the exhaust manifold, you should find the button that stops the engagement of the negative terminal of the battery and then relax it. If you have to remove a left side manifold, then you should loose the left front wheel lug nuts, lift the car and secure it with jackstands. It is common for these to be rusty, use penetrating oil on the exhaust pipe-to-manifold studs and nuts. In the case of a left-side manifold, pull off the left front wheel and the inner fender splash shield. Remove the exhaust pipe/catalytic converter pipe by loosening the nuts that attach it either to the exhaust manifold or directly to the cylinder head; the latter requires the removal of spark plugs. Where working on the right-side manifold, the oil dipstick tube should be evaluated and, if necessary, removed. If the manifold requires replacement, then unbolt the heat shield and manifold mounting bolts; then take off the exhaust manifold and gasket. You should also inspect the manifold for crack as well as clean the bolt threads to ensure there is no damage then ensure that the mating surface is clean by scraping out all the carbon deposit and gasket material with a gasket scraper but be careful as not to damage more the aluminum cylinder head. Place the heat shields, bolts, and gaskets over the manifold and make sure that the retaining tabs will just click into place while being put in. A medium strength thread locking compound should be applied to the threads of the bolts a 1/4 inch wide band starting at the 4th thread and excluding the first 3 threads. The manifold must be placed on the cylinder head and the mounting bolts tightened just enough to be held in position by the fingers. When tightening the bolts, it is necessary to begin with the center and move to the ends, tighten them in two stages to the required torque, if necessary, it is necessary to bend the protruding part of the gasket in the exhaust manifold back to the cylinder head. The rest of the procedures aim at the reverse of the above process of disassembly. Then, switch on the engine and search for exhaust leakage.

    Q:
How to remove and install an exhaust manifold in inline engine on GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the exhaust manifold, start by unscrewing the cable of the battery's negative terminal and lift the auto, placing it on stands. The exhaust pipe to manifold studs and nuts must also be lubed with penetrating oil while you work beneath and allow the oil to soak before trying to remove the nuts. Subsequently, pull the oxygen sensor out of the way and take out the nuts for the heat shield, und then the heat shield. Remove the exhaust manifold by using nut and bolt and then cleaning the sealing surfaces in the cylinder head and the manifold. When installing the manifold check for cracks on the manifold and at the same time check and clean the bolt threads using a gasket scraper to remove carbon deposits. For greater accuracy check for warpage using a straightedge and feeler gauges then either resurface or replace the manifold as required. Place a new gasket on the cylinder head and then place the manifold on the head, add heat resistant lock on the bolts and turn the bolts by hand. Re-tighten the bolting in three goes from an inner circle in a spiraling sequence to the recommended torque level. Lastly rev up the engine and look as well as listen to the pipes for any kind of leakage.

    Q:
What is the purpose of the catalytic converter and how can it be replaced on GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
    A:
The catalytic converter is an emission control device added to the exhaust system to reduce pollutants from the exhaust gas stream. A three-way (reduction) catalyst design is used. The catalytic coating on the three-way catalyst contains platinum and rhodium, which lowers the levels of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) as well as hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO). The test equipment for a catalytic converter is expensive and highly sophisticated. If you suspect that the converter on your vehicle is malfunctioning, take it to a dealer or authorized emissions inspection facility for diagnosis and repair. To replace the converter, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the bolts and detach the catalytic converter header pipe from the exhaust manifold. Remove the catalytic converter-to-muffler flange nuts and push the muffler back far enough for the studs to clear the converter flange. Remove the catalytic converter and pipe assembly. Clean the carbon deposits from the mounting flanges. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note: Because of a Federally mandated warranty which covers emissions-related components such as the catalytic converter, check with a dealer service department before replacing the converter at your own expense.

    Q:
Why are regular inspections of the exhaust system necessary for the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado? Posted by Customer
    A:
Regular inspections of the exhaust system are necessary to ensure safety and minimize noise. You should look for damaged or bent parts, open seams, holes, loose connections, excessive corrosion, or other defects that could allow exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle.
