Q:
How to remove and install an oil pan in DOHC engine? Posted by Customer
A:
Removal begins with loosening the front wheel lug nuts, raising the front of the vehicle, and supporting it securely on jackstands placed under the frame. The front wheels are then removed, followed by draining the engine oil and removing the dipstick. On 4WD models, the front differential assembly is removed. The transmission support bracket is removed if equipped, as well as the clutch/torque converter access plate. The engine is disconnected from the motor mounts and raised an inch or two with an engine hoist. The oil pan retaining bolts are removed and the oil pan is detached. If the pan is stuck, a soft-face hammer is used to dislodge the pan. For installation, a scraper is used to remove all traces of old gasket material and sealant from the block and oil pan. The gasket sealing surfaces are cleaned with lacquer thinner or acetone and the bolt holes in the block are cleaned. The oil pan flange is checked for distortion, particularly around the bolt holes. If necessary, the pan is placed on a block of wood and a hammer is used to flatten and restore the gasket surface. Using two new O-rings, the oil pump pick-up tube is installed and the pick-up tube retaining bolts are tightened to the torque. To facilitate installation of the oil pan, the strut tower bar is removed, the exhaust pipe is disconnected from the exhaust manifold, the engine mounts are removed and then, using an engine hoist, the engine is raised about one inch. A thin coat of RTV sealant is applied to the flange before installing the oil pan. The new gasket is attached to the pan, ensuring the bolt holes are aligned. The oil pan is positioned against the engine block and the mounting bolts are installed and tightened in a criss-cross pattern. The engine is lowered and reattached to the motor mounts. The clutch/torque converter access plate is installed, as well as the transmission support bracket if equipped. On 4WD models, the front differential assembly is installed. The engine is refilled with oil and the dipstick is inserted into the dipstick tube. The front wheels are installed and the vehicle is lowered to the ground. The engine is started and the pan is checked for leaks.

Q:
How to remove and install an oil pan on a Chevrolet Tracker SOHC engine? Posted by Customer
A:
Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands placed under the frame. Drain the engine oil. Remove the splash shield from under the engine. On Tracker and Sidekick models, remove the front differential carrier assembly. Remove the bell housing lower plate. On 1996 models, disconnect the electrical connector from the crankshaft position sensor. Remove the bolt and detach the sensor from the oil pan. Remove the bolts and detach the oil pan. Don't pry between the block and pan or damage to the sealing surfaces may result and oil leaks could develop. Use a soft-face hammer to dislodge the pan if it's stuck. On Samurai models, the oil pickup tube must be unbolted and dropped into the oil pan before the oil pan can be removed. Use a scraper to remove all traces of old gasket material and sealant from the block and oil pan. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone and make sure the bolt holes in the block are clean. Check the oil pan flange for distortion, particularly around the bolt holes. If necessary, place the pan on a block of wood and use a hammer to flatten and restore the gasket surface. Before installing the oil pan, apply a thin coat of ATV sealant to the flange. Attach the new gasket to the pan. Position the oil pan against the engine block and install the mounting bolts. Tighten them to the torque. Wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil, then start the engine and check the pan for leaks.
