Remove the timing belt, tensioner, crankshaft sprocket, and belt guide. Remove the oil pan and oil pickup tube. Remove the alternator and bracket. Unbolt the dipstick tube and pull it out of the engine front case. Remove the front cover-to-block bolts and carefully separate the front cover from the engine. Detach the cover from the rear of the case and remove the inner and outer oil pump gears. Remove the crankshaft oil seal from the front case. Remove the pressure relief valve retainer, spring, and plunger. Clean all parts thoroughly and remove all traces of old gasket material from the sealing surfaces. Visually inspect all parts for wear, cracks, and other damage. Replace parts as necessary. Install the oil pump outer and inner gears and measure the clearances. Compare the clearances to the specifications. Measure the free height of the relief valve spring and compare the measurement. Replace parts as necessary. Pack the pump cavity with petroleum jelly and install the cover. Replace the crankshaft front oil seal with a new seal. Install the pressure relief valve components. Using a new gasket, position the front cover on the engine. Install the bolts in their proper locations. Reinstall the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. Add oil, start the engine, and check for oil pressure and leaks.

The pump is disassembled, all parts are cleaned thoroughly, and old gasket material is removed from the sealing surfaces. Parts are visually inspected for wear, cracks, and damage, and replaced as necessary.
