Organize the piston/connecting rod assemblies and new ring sets so that each set corresponds to a specific piston and cylinder. Start by inserting the top (number one) ring into the first cylinder, ensuring it is squared up with the cylinder walls by gently pushing it with the piston's top, positioning it near the bottom of the cylinder. To measure the end gap, use feeler gauges inserted between the ring ends until the correct gap width is found, and it should slide with slight drag. Compare this measurement to the specifications to confirm it falls within the specified range. In case of a gap that is either too small or too large, ensure you have the correct rings and, if necessary, carefully file the ring ends to adjust the gap size. For end gaps greater than 0.040 inches, double-check the ring compatibility. Repeat this process for all rings designated for each cylinder, maintaining the correct pairings. Once end gaps are checked and adjusted, proceed to install the rings on the pistons. Start with the oil control ring, consisting of three components, placing the spacer/expander into the groove and ensuring an anti-rotation tang (if present) aligns with the drilled hole in the ring groove. Install the lower and upper side rails without using a ring installation tool for the side rails. Ensure smooth movement of both upper and lower side rails within the ring groove. The number two (middle) ring, typically marked, should be installed with the mark facing up and using a ring installation tool. Follow manufacturer instructions on ring packages, and don't mix up the top and middle rings, which have different cross-sections. Finally, install the number one (top) ring, ensuring the mark faces up and avoiding confusion between the top and middle rings. For later model engines without marks on the top ring, installation can be done with either side facing up. Repeat this procedure for the remaining pistons and rings, maintaining accurate pairings throughout the process.
