Q:
How do you remove the front drive axle? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the front axle shaft, start by removing the wheel cover and loosening the hub nut with a long breaker bar. Then, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and securely support it on jackstands. Apply the parking brake and use wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from rolling off the jackstands. Remove the front wheel. Proceed to remove the axle shaft/hub nut by preventing the hub from turning with a screwdriver inserted through the caliper and into the brake disc's cooling vanes, and then unscrew the nut and remove the washer. Place a drain pan beneath the transaxle near the differential to catch any leaking transaxle lubricant. Remove the brake caliper and disc and support the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire. For vehicles equipped with road-sensing suspension, disconnect the sensor link from the ball stud on the lower control arm. Remove the strut-to-steering knuckle bolts and separate the strut from the steering knuckle. Use a puller to push the axle shaft out of the hub, supporting the outer end of the axle shaft with a piece of wire to protect the inner CV joint. Afterward, remove the axle shaft from the transaxle. When installing the new axle shaft, lubricate the differential seal with multi-purpose grease, raise the axle shaft into position while supporting the CV joints, and insert the splined end of the inner CV joint into the differential side gear, ensuring it's properly seated. Apply a light coat of multi-purpose grease to the outer CV joint splines, pull out on the steering knuckle, and install the stub axle into the hub. Reconnect the strut to the steering knuckle, install the brake disc and caliper, and tighten the axle shaft/hub nut initially to 70 ft-lbs while preventing the disc from turning. After lowering the vehicle, tighten the axle shaft/hub nut further, tighten the wheel lug nuts, and reinstall the wheel cover. Finally, check the transaxle lubricant level and add more if needed.
