    Q:
How is power transmitted from the transaxle to the wheels through axle shafts and CV joints on Chevrolet Metro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The power is taken out of the transaxle to the wheels by means of two drive shafts; the inner ends of the two drive shafts are attached respectively to their fluorescent side gear in the transaxle by splined stub axle, which is indeed an integral part of the internal CV joint. The splined stub axle located on the outer end of the driveaxle passes through the steering knuckle as well as the axle hub and is held in place by a nut. The inner CV joints are the sliding tripod type, which can rotate on their axis and can also move in the axial direction; it comprises of a spider (which is the tripod as well as the bearings) and the CV joint casing where the tripod is allowed to move independently of the drive axles as the wheel moves. They are also rebuildable and; The outer CV joints are the ball-and-cage type with ball bearing positioned between an inner race and an outer race and held in position by a cage that permits angular movement but not axial movement; neither can they be rebuilt nor separated, and if one has to be replaced, then the whole driveaxle/outer joint has to be substituted. However, the boots have to be inspected regularly for signs of damage or leakage of the lubricant and if the boots of the CV joint has been damaged, it has to be replaced as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the joint. Usually, boot replacement requires the driveaxle to be pulled out; however, some auto parts stores sell "split" boots designed for a custom installation and are more convenient but require CV joint dismantling and cleaning to prevent its contaminants from accelerating boot wear. Lubricant leaks, a clicking noise in the joint when one is turning, a knocking sound as the car speeds up after coasting and vibrations at high speeds are some of the indicators of bad or worn CV joints. To test for wear of the cv joints and drive axles shafts, support and turn each axle in both directions while feeling for the joint and holding the cv housing for slop indicating sloppy CV joints or worn splines, also examine the drive ,axle shafts for crack, dent or distorted.
