Q:
How to remove and install a turbocharger on Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR and Saturn ION? Posted by Customer
A:
This procedure applies only to 2008 and later models that are factory-equipped with a turbocharger. First, drain the engine coolant below the level of the turbocharger. Then, remove the turbocharger and exhaust pipe heat shields. Next, remove the turbocharger exhaust pipe and seal. After that, remove the turbocharger oil feed pipe and gaskets. Care must be taken not to damage the pipe. Avoid twisting or kinking the plastic pipe. If the pipe is damaged, sufficient oil will not flow to the turbocharger, which will result in damage to the bearings. Then, remove the turbocharger coolant return pipe and gasket. After this, remove the cooler outlet pipe, feed pipe and gaskets. Unbolt the turbocharger mounting fasteners and bracket, then the oil return pipe and PCV bolt. Finally, remove the turbocharger. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check the engine oil level prior to starting the vehicle.
