- A:On automatic transaxle equipped vehicles, try to start the engine in each gear. The engine should crank only in Park or Neutral. If equipped with a manual transaxle, place the shift lever in Neutral and push the clutch pedal down about halfway. The engine should crank only with the clutch pedal fully depressed. Make sure the steering column lock allows the key to go into the Lock position only when the shift lever is in Park for automatic transaxle or Reverse for manual transaxle.
