    Q:
How to remove a manual or automatic Transmission Assembly in V8 engine on Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
To do this remove all the screws and the cover plate from the lower front face of the clutch bell housing, then the bolts holding the bell housing to the engine. Bear the weight of the transaxle and pull it back perpendicular to prevent damaging the clutch disc while this main drive gear is engaged to its splined hub. Slowly turn each clutch cover bolt anticlockwise until all the springs pressure is released and then slowly take out the assembly out from the face of the flywheel, make sure the disc does not fall off. Connecting the transmission back to the engine can be done in reverse to putting on the clutch disc cover with the disc centered if it was removed. To start with, unless working on an automatic transmission, there is a cover plate on the lower front face of the converter housing which has to be removed after which loosening of the driveplate to torque converter bolts using the crankshaft in cases where they are not easily accessed. Locate the relative position of the driveplate to the torque converter, then immobilise the driveplate using a large screwdriver to jam the starter ring gear. Sustain the transmission on blocks and unbolt the converter bellhousing to engine bolts and then you can pull out the engine away from the torque converter, with the hoist or a floor jack, and to maintain the torque converter pressed at the rear, until it is fully locked within the oil pump. Reconnection involves the undoing of the above mentioned steps, ensuring that the torque converter and driveplate have their mating marks lined correctly and tightening of the bolts to the required torque.

    Q:
How to remove and install a manual transmission assembly on Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the shift lever knob, and for 4-speed models, the spring and T-handle. Raise the vehicle for access beneath, then disconnect the speedometer cable and TCS switch on the transmission. Remove the drive shaft and support the engine/transmission by placing a jack and block of wood as an insulator under the oil pan. Remove the transmission mount to crossmember bolts and crossmember to frame attaching bolts, support the engine, and remove the crossmember. Disconnect the shift rods from the transmission, and for floor shift models, disconnect the backdrive rod at the bellcrank. For floor shift models, remove the bolts attaching the shift control assembly to the support, then carefully pull the unit down until the shift lever clears the rubber boot and remove the assembly from the vehicle. Remove the upper bolts from the transmission to clutch housing, install guide pins in the holes, and then remove the lower bolts. On some later models, it may be necessary to remove the catalytic converter to permit removal of the transmission. Lower the supporting jack until the transmission can be withdrawn rearwards and removed. When installing, raise the transmission into position and slide it forwards, guiding the clutch gear into the clutch housing. Install the transmission clutch housing retaining bolts and lock washers, and torque-tighten to the specified value. Slide the shift lever into the rubber boot and position the shaft control to the support, then install and torque-tighten the retaining bolts. Connect the shift rods to the transmission and torque-tighten the bolts, then connect the backdrive rod to the bell crank. Raise the engine and position the crossmember, then install and torque-tighten the transmission mount and crossmember retaining bolts. Install the drive shaft, connect the speedometer cable and TCS switch wiring, then install the T-handle and spring for 4-speed models, and the shift knob on floor shift models. Fill the transmission with the correct quantity and grade of lubricant, then lower the vehicle to the ground.

    Q:
How to remove and install a transmission assembly on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before the removal of the transaxle, the negative cable of the battery must be disconnected, and if there is an existent Anti-hijack system also known as Theft lock audio system, it must be turned off. Lift the car by using the jack and place it on the jackstands and then drain the transaxle. Disconnect bolts and cancel the torque converter cover and be sure to note the orientation of the torque converter and driveplate to properly align it at the time of reassembly. There are a number of bolts that hold the torque converter to the driveplate; to gain access to them, turn the crankshaft pulley bolt. Second, disconnect the starter motor and the driveaxles, take off the speed sensor and electrical connectors of the transaxle, and, if there are, sever any vacuum hoses. Any exhaust parts that hinder the removal of the transaxle should be taken off and the TV cable if existent should be disconnected, the shift linkage should also be disconnected. Place an assist with the three-bar support fixture and, then, take off the engine mount strut brackets. Place a jack underneath the transaxle ideally a hydraulic jack and disconnect the transaxle from the brace connecting the transaxle with the engine and the bolts holding the transaxle to the engine. Lower the transaxle a little further to seporate and cap the cooler lines just to make sure all the fluids are drained out. Perform an operation of disconnecting the dipstick tube, the tie rod ends, then unbolt the steering rack, and the engine mount nuts and front subframe assembly before you proceed to unscrew the Bolts that fix the front subframe assembly. Remove the transaxle as far as it is possible to pull it back to disengage the dowel pins situated in the engine block to the transaxle then lower the front subframe and a transaxle off the car. For installation, make sure the torque converter is fully mated to the transmission; rotate the torque converter while attempting to push it forward towards the transaxle and the converter will "thunk" into place. Apply multi-purpose grease on the torque converter hub, thereafter lifting the transaxle and the subframe into position and ensure it is parallel to the ground. Insert the dowel pins on to the torque converter and mate the converter splines with the driveplate splines, after that put the housing onto the engine and tighten the bolts that connect the housing to the engine as well as the torque converter to driveplate bolts to the proper torque. The suspension and chassis part should be reinstalled, jacks should be taken off and the dipstick tube should be installed. Bolt the starter motor back in place , reconnect the vacuum hoses if there are any, reconnect the shift and TV linkage and plug the electrical connector in. Torque converter cover, driveaxles and speedometer/speed sensor cable should be then installed. Replace/bend the shift linkage, replace any exhaust parts, lower the vehicle, fill the transaxle, road test the vehicle and check for any leaks.
