    Q:
What is the purpose of a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve on Cadillac ElDorado? Posted by Customer
    A:
Instead of venting them to the atmosphere, a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system is used to consume crankcase vapors in the combustion process. In gasoline engines, small amounts of combustion gas pass by the piston rings and get into the crankcase. Such crankcase blow-by gases have unwanted air pollutants, which are hydrocarbons. The PCV system is used to keep these vapors from getting away into the atmosphere while still allowing for adequate ventilation of the crankcase that ensures good oil quality. It should be checked every time you change oil and serviced every 48,000 kilometers (30,000 miles). For it can be damaged, never run an engine without a PCV valve or a ventilation system. Beginning with locating PCV valve usually found either in valve cover or intake manifold and then disconnecting the crank case ventilation tube from the positive crank case ventilation valve followed by removing the PCV valve from its grommet, install PCV valve by having it inserted into grommet with connecting ventilation tube to PCV valve.

    Q:
How to check and replace the PCV valve on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The PCV valve is commonly located near the top of the engine and perhaps, the most commonly known location is the rocker arm cover. Place the engine at normal operating temperature and remove the valve with the hose still connected to it from the rubber grommet of the cover, applying ones finger over the opening, the suction should be felt and by shaking the valve, a rattling sound heard. If there is no vacuum at the valve, it maybe that the hose, the manifold port or the valve is plugged so replace any plugged or deteriorated hoses. Somehow, the PCV valve is checked for any rattle after it has been shut off and the engine has been turned off: If one cannot hear any rattle with the PCV valve, then, it should be replaced with a new one. To change the valve, the valve has to removed from the end of the hose and it is very important to notice where and in which direction the valve was installed. Purchasing a replacement must be of the same vehicle and the engine size as before; it is also required to check the old valve against the new one. Lastly, slip the valve into the end of the hose until it has clicked into place and check the rubber grommet for signs of wear; if worn replace the grommet, then push the PCV valve and hose home.

    Q:
How to replace a PCV valve on Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
    A:
Usually, you may find the PCV valve pushed into one of the rocker arm covers on the side of the engine, with a hose attached to it which runs either to the intake manifold or the carburetor. Thus, when purchasing a new PCV valve, make sure that it is designed for your specific vehicle, model year and engine size. Subsequently, use pliers or screwdriver (according to type of pipe clip) to loosen clamp on end of hose and move clamp up toward PCV hose. Next, pull the PCV valve off from its end of hose while remembering its installed position and direction. This will assist in ensuring that the old valve is similar to the new one. Gently push new valve until fully seated into end of hose. Move hose clamp down hose then tighten it securely around end of hose. Inspect rubber grommet in cover for damage and replace if necessary. Lastly, press in the PCV valve and hose snugly into rocker arm cover. More information about PCV system can be found elsewhere.

    Q:
Where is the PCV valve typically located and how do you replace it on Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
    A:
The PCV valve is most often mounted to one of the rocker arm covers beneath the bonnet on the side of the given car's engine, and connected by a hose either to the carburetor or the intake manifold. While purchasing a new one, always try and make sure that it is compatible with the year model of your car and its engine capacity. To uninstall the valve it has to be pulled out from its rubber grommet in the rocker arm cover with the hose connected. This will require one to use pliers or a screw driver to open the clamp that is at the end of the hose then slide it up. Next turn off and disconnect the pcv valve from the hose and find out the position and direction of it. Check that the old and new generating valve are equal. Place the new valve onto the hose and screw it down till it fixes properly then place the clamp on the farther end of the hose and tighten it. You should wipe this rubber grommet and check it for wear and replace if required, you should then insert the PCV valve and the hose back into the rocker arm cover position.

    Q:
How to check and replace the PCV valve on Chevrolet K1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
The rocker arm cover is home to the PCV valve. Start the engine and allow it to idle until normal operating temperature is reached. While leaving the hose attached, draw the valve out of the rubber grommet in the cover. Then, put your finger over the valve opening. If there's no suction, an obstructed hose, manifold port or problem with a valve could be a reason behind that. In case such hoses get blocked or deteriorated, they should be replaced. Also, turn off the engine and shake the PCV valve. If it doesn't rattle, then it is time to replace it. To do this, remove the valve remembering how it was positioned from the end of the hose. When purchasing a new PCV valve ensure you have picked up right one for your vehicle and engine size by comparing it with old one. Once you have that new valve, push it into the end of hose all way in so that it seats well. Look at rubber grommet for any damage and replace if necessary. Finally return back your PCV valve and its hose to their original place.

    Q:
How to replace a PCV valve on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
The PCV valve is found in the rocker arm cover or intake manifold, connected to a hose leading to the carburetor or manifold. When replacing, ensure the new valve matches your vehicle and engine size. To replace, remove the valve and hose from the rubber grommet, then detach the valve from the hose. Compare the old and new valves for similarity. Insert the new valve into the hose, reinstall the clamp, and check the grommet for damage, replacing if needed. Finally, reposition the PCV valve and hose.
