    Q:
What steps should be followed for the installation and inspection of the camshaft,Cam Gear,Camshaft Seal and Lash Adjuster in 3.4L V6 engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure will require special tools available at automotive tool companies and some auto part stores. If the specialty tools, such as camshaft timing clamps, camshaft sprocket holding tool, and camshaft and intermediate shaft sprocket remover, are not available, obtain similar tools and adapt them for this application. Begin by removing the cam carrier and the Lash Adjusters from the cam carrier housing, keeping the Lash Adjusters in order for reinstallation. Turn the camshafts so the "flats" are facing up, then install the special camshaft timing clamp tool. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts using the sprocket holding tool to hold the sprockets while loosening the bolts. Use a puller to remove the sprockets and then take out the flat ring from the sprocket bore. Next, remove the camshaft thrust plate cover and the thrust plate, followed by the timing clamp, and carefully withdraw the camshafts through the back of the cam carrier, ensuring not to damage the camshaft journals. Remove the seals from the carrier by carefully prying them out with a screwdriver, taking care not to damage the aluminum seating surface in the carrier. Inspect for damage or pitting on the camshaft lobes, check the nose of the camshaft for brinelling, and examine the camshaft journals inside the carrier for wear or damage. When installing the camshaft, exercise care to avoid damaging the seal, and coat the camshaft lobes and journals with moly-base grease or engine assembly lube prior to installation, ensuring the arrow on the thrust plate points up. Install the camshaft seal using a large socket and a hammer, or a piece of pipe if a large socket isn't available, making sure the seal enters the bore squarely and stops when the front face is at the same depth as the original seal. Finally, the remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, and be sure to check cam timing after reassembly and before starting the engine.

    Q:
When should the Timing Chain and Variable Timing Sprocket be replaced and How to remove and install in 2.8L,3.1L V6 engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The timing chain should be replaced if the engine has high mileage, shows visible damage, or if the free play between the sprockets exceeds one inch, as failure to do so may lead to erratic engine performance, loss of power, and decreased fuel mileage, with the risk of the chain "jumping" timing or breaking, potentially causing severe engine damage. To begin removal, take off the timing chain cover and loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt(s) without removing them. Temporarily install the vibration damper bolt and turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, ensuring proper alignment based on the model. After removing the camshaft sprocket bolts without turning the camshaft, use two large screwdrivers to pry the camshaft sprocket off the dowel pin and slip the timing chain and camshaft sprocket off the engine. Timing chains and sprockets should be replaced in sets; if installing a new timing chain, remove the crankshaft sprocket with a puller and install a new one, aligning the key in the crankshaft with the keyway in the sprocket. Inspect the timing chain damper for cracks and wear, replacing it if necessary, and clean the timing chain and sprockets with solvent, drying them with compressed air while wearing eye protection. Check all components for wear and damage, looking for deformed, chipped, pitted, or cracked teeth. For installation, if the camshaft was moved, rotate it to position the dowel pin correctly, mesh the timing chain with the camshaft sprocket, and engage it with the crankshaft sprocket, ensuring the timing marks are aligned. Install and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt(s) to the specified torque, lubricate the chain and sprocket with clean engine oil, and reinstall the timing chain cover, completing the remaining steps in reverse order of removal.

    Q:
How to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and replace the Timing Chain and Variable Timing Sprocket in 2.2L four cylinder engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and if there is an option of lock out on Theftlock audio system, it should be disabled. Lift off the crankshaft pulley and the timing chain cover you will be needing later. Before removing the chain and sprockets you can only estimate the conditions of the sprockets through observing the conditions of the teeth and also you can check the tensioner of the timing chains. Should any of them get worn out, it should be replaced since failure results in fluctuating of the engine performance and HIJ's fuel consumption. Any Hytera component that requires replacement should have other corresponding components such as the tensioner replaced as well. For the removal of the chain and sprockets, sometimes it is easier to fit a bolt in the crankshaft and turn the engine until the camshaft and crankshaft dots are lined up. Take off the timing chain tensioner upper bolt and then loosen the tensioner Torx bolt but do not take it out. Remove the cam shaft sprocket and the timing chain by using a little force as possible. If the crankshaft sprocket is to be removed then use puller only for the purpose. For installation use moly-base grease to lubricate the thrust side then fits the crankshaft sprocket and make sure that the Woodruff key is inserted correctly. Slide the timing chain over the camshaft sprocket and reset the timing marks and then install the sprocket while applying the right amount of torque not hammering the sprocket to the block. One final time it is important to verify the positioning of timing marks and correct if inappropriately positioned. The 'dirty' side of the chain must be lubricated with clean engine oil, the tensioner spring is pressed in with a special tool and locked in place with a nail or cotter pin. Last of all, reinstall the other parts in the reverse of the sequence in which they were removed.
