    Q:
How to replace the fuel filter on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
For carburetor-equipped vehicles from 1985, the fuel filter is located inside the fuel inlet nut at the carburetor, made of pleated paper or porous bronze, and cannot be cleaned or reused. The procedure should be performed with the engine cold and the engine cover removed, using open-end wrenches for the fuel line nuts and flare nut wrenches if available. Begin by removing the air cleaner assembly, noting or tagging any vacuum hoses that need to be disconnected. Follow the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carburetor, placing rags under the fuel inlet fittings to catch any spilled fuel. Use the proper size wrench to hold the fuel inlet nut while loosening the fitting at the end of the metal fuel line, ensuring the inlet nut remains secure. After disconnecting the fuel line, move it aside without kinking it, then unscrew the fuel inlet nut carefully, taking care not to lose the thin washer-type gasket or the spring behind the fuel filter. Compare the old filter with the new one for length and design, reinstall the spring in the carburetor body, place the new filter in position, and tighten the nut securely without cross-threading. Reconnect the fuel line to the fuel inlet nut, using a back-up wrench to avoid cross-threading. Start the engine and check for leaks, addressing any issues with stripped threads by using thread sealing tape or obtaining a repair kit if necessary. For fuel-injected vehicles, the fuel filter is an in-line type located under the vehicle along the left side frame rail near the engine. Begin by performing the fuel pressure relief procedure, then raise the vehicle securely on jackstands and place a container or rags under the fuel filter. Using two wrenches, disconnect the fuel lines from the filter, and detach the filter from the bracket. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the flow indication arrow on the filter points towards the engine, and check for leaks after starting the engine.

    Q:
How to replace the fuel filter on Chevrolet C1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
All models employ an in-line fuel filter located on the left side frame rail, under the bed. To replace it, first relieve the fuel system pressure. Place a drain pan under the filter area. On most models, the fuel filter is an inline type mounted inside the frame rail. Use back-up wrenches when loosening the fuel line fittings at the filter. Use a flare-nut wrench to disconnect the fuel lines from the filter, and be sure to use a back-up wrench to hold the filter. Be prepared to deal with residual fuel when loosening the fittings. On some later utility models, the fuel filter is in a cartridge type housing. Unscrew the housing and let the fuel drain, then clean the inside of the housing. Install the filter as it was removed. On cartridge type systems, lightly oil the cartridge gasket and put a new filter into the housing. Tighten the housing 2/3 of a turn after the gasket makes contact. After completing the work, check the area carefully for fuel leaks. If the fuel filter was clogged, the fuel tank may have dirt in it and may need to be cleaned.

    Q:
How is the fuel filter replaced on Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
    A:
In all make and models of cars manufactured by GM the fuel filter is installed inside the fuel inlet to the carburetor and can either be pleated papers for later designs or bronze for earlier designs and cannot be cleaned for reuse. This job should be done when the engine is cold after 3 hours of idling and OR wrenches for the fuel line nuts and flare nut wrench if available, another filter for the car and engine and few clean rags. The first step is to take out the air cleaner assembly, and take note or mark those vacuum hoses that should be disconnected so that they can be reattached later. Trace the fuel hose from the fuel pump, position at the low right front of the engine, to the carburetor, which is usually connected by metal line. While disconnecting the fuel line, lay piece of rags under the fuel inlet fittings to any fuel spillage. Using the right size wrench, and standing the nut beside the carburetor body, turn the nut-fitting and the end of the fuel metal line.It is important in this process to ensure that the larger nut does not slip from your hand. Just after disconnecting the fuel line, it should be slid slightly aside in order not to crimp it while gaining access to the inlet filter nut. Slowly unscrew the fuel inlet filter nut without loosing the small thin washer-type gasket and the spring located behind the filter to be careful on the filter installation. Measure the old filter with the new one to find out which is longer before comparing the design of the two filters then fix the spring onto the carburetor body after ascertaining whether the spring has any sign of damage. Place the new filter trailing the spring, it may be installed in the correct direction for the bronze or paper filter. replace the washer-type gasket using the fuel inlet filter nut and screw it firmly onto the carburetor but not too roughly thus causing stripping or leading to the leakage of fuel. While attaching the fuel inlet nut, use a wrench to hold the nut tightly while connecting the fuel line, this is because one is usually in a very tight place and may end up cross threading. Attach a clip to the vacuum hose that leads to the air cleaner snorkel motor to enable the running of the engine and look for any signs of leakage. Wherever there are signs of leakage at the fuel line connector, make sure you remove the connector and check if the threads for the line are worn out or stripped and if so you change the line, if not then thread sealing tape is used. Last of all, reconnect all hoses to their designed positions and refit the air cleaner assembly back into position.

    Q:
How to replace a fuel filter on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Relieve the fuel system pressure. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Unscrew the fuel line-to-fuel filter fittings. Use a back-up wrench on the fuel filter side of the fitting; use a flare-nut wrench to unscrew the outer nut. Use a back-up wrench to keep from twisting the line. If the car is equipped with plastic "quick-connect" fittings, squeeze the tabs on the fitting and pull it apart. If the car is equipped with metal quick-connect fittings, pull back the rubber boot and twist the fitting one-quarter turn to loosen any dirt. Then, if compressed air is available, blow the dirt away from the connection. Use a special fuel line separator tool to disconnect the fitting. Remove the filter from the clip. Snap the new filter securely into the clip. Make sure the arrow on the filter points toward the engine. Using new O-rings, reattach the fuel lines to the filter. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the O-rings to ease reassembly.
